i have a few questions about my cat. my cat is less than a year old he already weighs 16 pounds!!! he is an american shorthair, nutered, and declawed. i dont understand why and how he got thatfat. i mean he can barley clean his butt because he cant reach down there. it's realy gross. i got him as an orphan no more than 2 weeks old and had to bottle feed him. i dont know what could be causing this. if any one has any ideas please e-mail me back at freakygirl86@aol.com or just leave a post. thanks alot IP: Logged |

Oh my goodness! the vet--take him to the vet!! my cat just died recently he was only 5 year old this morning was the worst day of my life. one minute he was fine, then he died immediately! i cried and cried. we took him to the vet, who shook her head sadly. she said that he had a blocked artery, and a weak heart from all that eating, and no exercise--so his poor little heart just stopped. PLEASE get him tested and checked out before its too late--I beg you. I am still in shock and mourning--I can't even type this reply properly .... IP: Logged |

Just to be safe you may want to have the cat checked by a vet to rule out any health problems causing the weight gain. If there are no health problems get the cat on a feeding schedule by measuring out his food and feeding two or three times per day rather than free feeding. You can also switch to a lower calorie food (doenst have to be a light food). Royal Canin is one brand that comes to mind which has several formulas with low calories and even a "Slim" formula that cuts back on fat but not on protein. To reduce the weight of two of mine I put them on a feeding schedule, changed their food to California Natural (for the lower calories) and fed them 1/4 cup twice per day. I also bought a lazer light to get them more active - this seems to be a big hit with my cats..they love it and I beleive it is helpful in getting inactive cats to exercise. IP: Logged |

Welcome to my world!! My cat just turned 1 and is 15 lbs. He too had a problem cleaning himself. I had him IAMS catfood, and then my friend who works at the vet said to put him on IAMS or Science Diets reduced fat. I put him on IAMS reduced fat/diet whatever its called and he loves it. And of course we now have a clean bottom. So I did a test, I put him back on the regular IAMS and bam, dirty butt again. He's now back on the diet food and both he and I are very happy. I got tired of seeing his 'butt' marks on the floor by his food bowl. It's funny to think back on it, but I too was worried to death. My friends told me their cat was 20 lbs and had no cleaning problems, thats when I got worried. All is fine now. But you may want to try that. I just bought the small bag (2 wk supply - cup a day) and noticed a difference after the first week. Keep us posted on what happens!! IP: Logged |
