It sounds like the cat is just trying to play, but the dog probably doesn't think so. I would deffinately try to make them friends. Playing with them together, feeding them side by side, and alot of socialization will help prevent any future quarrels. I would not, however, leave them alone together while you're gone. Knowing the temperment of that breed of dog, as well as any dog, you never know when a play session could turn to a fight. Unfortunately, cats just can't hold up during fights with dogs well, so if they were to get in a fight, it could mean the demise of your kitty. Now, for making your cat leave the dog alone. Whenever the kitty starts acting up and aggrivating the dog, just pick her up, sternly say "no" and put her in a room away from the dog. Also, petting and reassuring the dog while the cat is playing with him will help him better understand what's going on. (so he doesn't think he's being attacked by dryer lent with teeth and claws!) Hope everything works out.... IP: Logged |

I agree with everything Mistygirl said and wanted to add...if you play with the kitten and get her really tired out she will most likely leave the dog alone. Lazer lights, the fishing pole type toys and little sponge bouncy balls (just dont leave them out where the dog might get them and swallow them) work great to tire mine out. IP: Logged |

When I brought my first dog home I had three cats. The cats were not happy about it. The first night he was home he was sitting in the living room and the three cats came from three different directions and attacked him at once. I swear it was an organized attack. They saw him as an intruder. Now two of the three don't mind the dog at all. The other one still picks on him from time to time. I don't think your cat is trying to play, its pissed off that this dog is there. But the cat will get used to it. It will just take some adjustment. IP: Logged |
