I have a kitty who has irritable bowel syndrome. She is supposed to get fiber (metamucil) every day. At first I mixed it up with soft food and she ate it right away. Now she wont eat the soft food. She gets all excited when I am mixing it, then eats a few bites and runs off. I even tried switching brands of food and putting tuna juice on it. Does anyone have any experience with giving fiber to cats? I'm wondering if there is another way for her to get fiber.

Have you tried mixing in something like an 'allbran' cereal to her wet food it might taste a little better

Can someone give me some more info on IBS? My vet suspected she has it but suggested that I keep her on a static diet to reduce inflammation....so for example give her only one certain type of kibble and one certain type of wet food such as beef or chicken. I'm to try this for a month to see what happens as he suspects its a type/flavour of what I had been using that is causing IBS. But he never mentioned extra fiber. Can anyone offer more info?

All I know is what happened with me. My kitty was constipated, and when she would poop it was mucousy and had blood in it, so I took her in. The vet took some x-rays to rule out a blockage. She said that it she had Irritable Bowel Syndrome due to stress, the other cats pick on her sometimes. She said to try using fiber as a first step, b/c sometimes it resolves the problem. If that didn't work, she said we would have to switch her food and give her a type of protein that she has never had before like duck. Thats all I know about IBS in cats, I didn't even know they got it before that happened. The fiber works when she eats it, but getting her to eat it is a problem.

I haven't tried an allbran cereal, I might give that a go.

Rather than adding fiber to her food...is'nt there a high fiber cat food available that would be suitable for the IBS? Also, maybe there is a different source of fiber you can try other than metamucil that she may eat more readily. Canned pumpkin is a good source of fiber and many cats seem to love it....not sure if it would be suitable for an IBS cat though but maybe you can ask your vet?

I will ask about a high fiber food. I'm not sure if I could do that or not though, cause she is the only one that needs it and it would be hard to keep her from getting to the other cats food and vice versa. I tried to give her canned pumpkin before and it did not go over well. She wouldn't eat it. She's a little finicky sometimes.

Our baby had a few ummmmm bowel problems in the beginning and after much trial and error on food and herbals the one and only high fiber/natural food we have found to make him regular and no gas is INNOVA. GREAT STUFF.

I also use Innova...mine do wonderful on it.

I heard of Innova after reading many books on cats and natural healing for animals. It kept coming up as one of the best natural foods....also california naturals but since our baby did so well on innova we opted to just stick with it and not try anything else.

Just an update on my kitty. I asked the vet about a high fiber food and she gave me one to sample. My kitty loves it, she prefers to eat it over her old food. I have also found that her favorite brand of soft food is the Wal-Mart generic one. I tried everything else, and the only other one she liked at all was Friskies. She's a picky little thing. Between the new food, and the soft food with metamucil she is doing very well.
