My cat is 6 months old, and today he just started making a weird noise in his throat while he's eating. He does it with both his dry and also his soft food. It almost sounds like a piggy oinking sound (odd I know, but kind of hard to explain the actual noise) as he's swallowing it. He chews it up fine, but with every swallow he has that weird noise, and it looks like maybe he's having trouble swallowing it, but yet he's not choking or anything, and he's still eating as normal. Has anyone else ever encountered such a problem before? I'm calling my vet first thing in the morning, but I was just trying to get some insight from some others.

That's interesting. Are you sure he isn't growling. When my cats really like something, they growl to let the other one know they can't have any. Never any agressive behavior, but they still growl. If your kitten was the runt, then maybe he has developed this to defend "his kill". Does that make any sense? IP: Logged |

Hi, thanks for your reply. Yep, it made perfect sense! My cat is definitely not the runt, he's a big ol' ox LOL. He's only 6 months old, and already the size my 18yr old cat was.. YIKES! He wasn't growling with his food, turns out he had a throat infection. First for everything I suppose, I've never had a cat get one before. I ended up taking him to the vet, and she said the throat infection was causing him to make that strange noise as he ate, because his throat was sore, weird! But all is well now, and my big ol' baby took his meds and is all better now. Thanks again! IP: Logged |
