What a terrible experience I am having with my new darling Himalayan kitten! I did not know she had ringworm when I got her (but I sure bet the breeder did) and didn't realize it until my 9 year old neighbor girl, then I, got ringworm. sigh... Anyway, I'm using topical treatments with little success, literally every day there was a new "hot spot" that had popped up. I did alot of research on the internet and read about Program flea medicine. Tried that 2 days ago, and haven't seen a new hot spot since then. Anyone out here ever have a ringworm problem? I have sooo many questions!! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Have you taken this kitten to a vet? If not you really should. A vet can answer all of your questions about ringworm as well as provide proper treatment. Good luck. IP: Logged |

I would also contact the breeder and inform her of the situation. If she is a responsible breeder (I have doubts that she is if she adopted out kittens infected with ringworm) she can have her cats checked and warn others who have adopted possibly infected kittens from her. At the very least, I would complain and see if she will be responsible for part of the vet bill if indeed the kitten had ringworm prior to you adopting it. IP: Logged |

This kitten has been to the vet's 4 times this month and yes, I told the breeder. The first vet looked at the one (and only) sore she had at the time and shrugged, saying it was nothing. Thats why we got infected...played with the cat for 2 weeks...then we got ringworm and she broke out with more spots. The second vet gave me the ointments but knew nothing about program. Just wondered about anyone having experience with Program. Thanks. [This message has been edited by IowaJo (edited 09-07-2003).] IP: Logged |

In order for program to work for ringworm you have to give twice the normal monthly dosage. I made this mistake myself the first time. And it has to be eaten with a meal. It works very well for ringworm when it is given right. The spot will still be there for a while. It takes a long time for the hair to come back and for it to look normal. You shouldn't see any new spots crop up after you give the program, but the original ones will take at least 4-10 days to show improvement. IP: Logged |

fleafly.....that's what I wanted to hear...that it has worked for someone else!! The only Program my Vet had were pills that expired in '98! I gave her one anyway, and she has had no new "hot spots" since. I was seeing a new spot pop up about every 12 hours. I have ordered some more Program that will be here by Tuesday. I will give her another dose as soon as it gets here. Do you think I should double that dosage? She sure looks awful...the poor thing. Thanks everyone for all the replys! IP: Logged |

I would double the dosage when you get the program. They need to get double the dosage for it to work. They have actually done studies on program and ringworm. They found that they had to receive a double dose at once, and that there were no harmful effects at 5 & 6 times the normal monthly amount. I usually order mine on the internet b/c its cheaper. Thanks fleafly! The cheapest I found Program for was $36 including shipping for the liquid. I think I would have preferred the pills...but didn't shop around more as I was in a hurry to order. I gave her one expired Program pill on Thursday (45 mg)and have already seen an improvement. It sounds like I can still give her a double dose of the fresh Program when I get it, without worrying about her getting too much, right? Thanks for your imput....I appreciate it! IP: Logged |

I would definately give a double dose. I have never used the liquid but I assume it is just as effective. IP: Logged |
