My mom is caring for a baby kitten and we could use some help. We've raised newborn kittens before, but this one is a little different. The mother had three kittens and two of them died shortly after she had them. She ended up rejecting the third one, no longer letting it nurse. So my mom brought the kitten inside to care for. She has him on a heating pad and is feeding him with a bottle every two hours. The problem is that he is a little over three weeks old and still SO tiny. His eyes are open, but he otherwise still looks like he's a week old (at the most!). Also, we can not get him to suck on a bottle at all and he seems not to have any interest in eating. We are giving him the milk replacer and end up forcing him to take the milk from a needless syringe since he won't use the bottle. But he still isn't eating nearly enough -- about 3 Tbspn a day, and the container says that at his age he should have 6. He also has barely gone to the bathroom at all -- just a few drops now and then. (We know how to rub and everything.) The vet says that with a kitten so small, there isn't much to do because he can't take blood or give an IV for fluids, etc. and said to try our best keeping him warm and feeding him as much as we can. So that's what we're doing. But if anyone has any suggestions, please let us know! His name is Rocky, because although he's so tiny, he's sure fighting to live! IP: Logged |

I am sorry for your troubles, I don't really have any advice. Good luck to you, I wish you LOTS of luck. It sounds like he isn't doing so well, but don't give up. Hopefully he'll start eating. It is so hard, we lost one in March who wouldn't eat. It is so sad, I have his brother and I am thankful for my baby. You are good people doing a good thing. IP: Logged |

Hi, You say your mom is feeding every 2hours, i would give him a feed every 30mins until he is eating the correct amount of food. Is he doing his business ok?? Is his temprature normal... Hand fed kittens usually take longer to grow.. My mum had the same problem with one of her kittens one would eat loads but the smaller one would only eat little bits.. I hand fed the smaller one every 30mins for about a week and after that she was eating well, at 4 weeks you can start to wean the kitten on soft kitten food just small amounts about 4-5 times aday and a saucer of his substitute milk and hopefully you will find your little kitty will soon be the correct weight and height.... plz keep us posted of his progress and if you have anymore problems plz feel free to email me at boro_lad1976@hotmail.com and i will be pleased to help you... mike IP: Logged |

IVE RAISED SEVERAL NEWBORN KITTENS AND PUPS ON COTTAGE CHEESE AND PEDIALITE(WHAT YOU GET FOR KIDS AT GROCERIE STORE)FOR A KITTEN THAT YOUNG I WOULD SUGGEST PUTTING COTTAGE CHEESE IN BLENDER WITH A LITTLE PEDIALITE AND BLEND UNTIL ITS VERY BLENDED..THEN TRY FEEDING THE KITTEN..WILL GIVE ELECTROLITES AND COTTAGE CHEESE HAS LOTS OF FAT AND IS GOOD FOR THEM. ALSO IF YOU HAVE A FRESHEND GOAT , GOAT MILK IS VERY GOOD TOO. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Thank you all for you advice! It's now been a couple weeks and Rocky is definitely drinking much better out of a bottle and also going to the bathroom. We're very thankful for that although he doesn't have any interest in eating anything other than from the bottle. But he is still so small. I don't think he's grown at all. We're taking it day by day!! Thanks again for you help!! IP: Logged |
