![]() ![]() ![]() Hello fellow cat lovers ![]() Hope you all can help me out with a smelly problem that my family and I are having. For starters we have 2 kitties. One's about 2 and a half months old and the other is about 6 months old. We have one big litter box for them and they use it just fine. Now the problem is that the room that the kitties sleep in smells. And when you open their door in the morning the smell drifts throughout our house. We've tried leaving the windows open and even that didn't totally emlininate the smell. With the weather getting colder we can't leave the window open and the smell is trapped in our house. We've switched litter multiple times. Right now we are using Arm&Hammer scoopable kind and we mix that with some crystal litter. My husband scoops the litter box every day. We've even bought a new litter box, the one that looks like a little house. But the smell is still there. It's a kind of strong fume like smell. Very overpowering, not sure if it's caused by the room door being shut at night. Or maybe it's something else. Any suggestions are very much appreciatd! ![]() ![]() ![]() Don't know if I can recommend brands, but ehre goes.... Give MaxxCat a try for multiple cats. I have two with one litter box and it holds its scent for a couple weeks. Have you thought of cleaning it out 2x a day? Also, keeping the door closed at night will hold the scent in and make it smelly when you open it. Good luck! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() As far as scoopable litter goes, Arm & Hammer and Tidy Cat are the best. I would try cleaning it out twice a day. How often are you changing the litter out? The box should probably be emptied and cleaned out once a week. In my experience a smell builds up when the litter has been in the box too long, I think it loses its effectiveness or something. There was a recent post about litter, you might read that and see what was suggested there. Just do a search for litter. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Melissa, Baking soda definitely works wonders in a litter box. I posted about it in the litter poll section also. I have a very extra sensitive nose, so getting rid of litter box odor was quite a challenge for me. I also use Arm & Hammer Scoopable - UNSCENTED... I put baking soda on the bottom of the box, and also mix some into the litter a couple times a day, and I have absolutely no smell whatsoever, not even inside the litter box itself. Also, follow fleafly's suggestion.. make sure you scoop as often as possible so nothing is sitting in there, and completely change the litter once a week and sanatize the box once a week. I use an automated box called the "Litter Robot"... I don't have to scoop at all, the box dumps the waste into a drawer as soon as they go... gotta love that! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Oh yah... I forgot to mention... I've personally found that the "crystal blend" type litters amplify the urine smell... I steer clear of those. The crystals have some type of strong perfume scent that I personally don't care for the smell of, especially once it's mixed with cat urine... YUCK! Since I've started buying only unscented litter, I haven't had the strong amonia/urine smell problem. IP: Logged |
