Has anyone had personal experience switching off a prescription diet for UTI's (such as Purina CNM UR Formula or the equivalent Science Diet formula) and feeding a premium food such as Innova, Eagle Pack, or Chicken Soup instead?

When our kitten had a UTI, the vet told us that we could use 'over the counter' foods. She said Purina One for Urinary Health would work fine. The UTI did clear up while she was on that food. Sorry I'm not quite answering your question since you'd like to know about the premium food. But, that's my experience. IP: Logged |

Did you then switch back to your regular food? My cat that has the problem got several UTI's right in a row - he kept getting them until we switched his food to Purina CNM (only sold by vets). Since then, he has not had any. He was around 1-2 years old when he got the UTI's and now he is 13 years old. He has been on the CNM this whole time (my other cat eats it as well even though she never had any problems). I am thinking of switching foods and I figured I could always go back to the CNM if he has trouble - but what if I don't notice? Or what if there are complications? I hate to mess with something that is working, but the ingredients in the premium foods sure seem better than what he is eating now.

We kept her on the food for a few months. We then actually switched to a different flavor of the same brand (not for UTIs). I kept a close eye on her and she was fine. Her UTI was pretty obvious. She cried when she peed and she kept going in all the corners of the house. I don't know if it would help/work... what if you took your current food and mixed it in with the food you want to use? Then, keep an eye on him for the symptoms he had when he was young. Then, depending on what happens, ween him off of the special food. My kitten's UTI did repeat itself a couple times until it went away for good. It's been a year now and to this day, I have to find her when I hear her meow to make sure she's not sick again. I think she caught on and just knows that I'm wrapped around her little paw! IP: Logged |

Jamiya - does your bag of Purina UR list the kcals/kg, magnesium percentage and target urine ph? It *might* be okay to feed another brand that maintains a urinary ph between 6.0 - 6.4 and has less than 20mg/100 kcal magnesium (you would have to contact each company to get this info.) but I would check with your vet first. Your vet may be able to tell you what levels to look for in another food for your individual cat. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Check the Ash level cuz apparently that causes uti's as well in felines. My vet recommended IAMS to me and I get it at both Canadian tire and walmart for like $0.85, goodluck. FRISKIES SUX!!! IP: Logged |
