I am a little concerned..... I adopted 2 kittens, brother & sister, where they were 11 weeks old. Both are due to get spayed/neutered next week.....they are now 5 months old. How can I tell when the female is in heat? I have read that the kitten will do nothing but cry/meow, etc. But will she still do this around the male? What other signs can I look for so I really know if she goes into heat? I am so afraid that she will before her surgery, and that the male will try to mate with her!! Please help me. I have read so many different articles and I really still dont know. Thanks IP: Logged |

If she is in heat she will likely become very vocal and act very affectionate and yes she will still do this around the male. If you think she is going into heat then it might be wise to keep her seperated from the male until the surgery. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I would keep them separated. I had two kitten who were 5 months old and the boy had an appointment to be neutered. Well the girl got pregnant and I did the math and it happened the week before he went in. They were both 5 1/2 months old. I didn't even know she had gone in to heat. Better safe than sorry- I would keep them separated. IP: Logged |

Hi, You Can tell the same way you can with a dog on there back just above the tail if you rub in a circular motion she will crouch if she is in heat.... She will cry out alot this is her way of letting all tom cats in the area know she is coming into heat... She will become loving... Since you have a tom ( male) in your household it would have to agree to keep the cats apart... Its not wise to have any animal spayed while going throught there heat cycle its always better to wait till the week after or before there first heat some vets have a different view on the procedure... If Your cat is in heat chance are she may already be pregnant... if She is and you dont want her to have the kittens when she goes to be spayed mention this to your vet and he will to a termination at the same time as spaying her it may cost a little more but its worth it knowing your kitty wont have the burden of raising a family and alot of unwanted kittens in shelters or abandoned on the street... good luckj with your cats and hope you have many happy years with them... mike IP: Logged |

Thank you everyone for the info. Here is what she has (or hasnt been doing): 1. I never hear her meow, she doesnt make any noise....just her usual purring (she has always been like this) 2. She has been just a little more affectinate with me, but really not much. 3. Over the last week, she has started to lick herself a little more and also wants to play more (more hyper I guess you can say)...... Now, I have read that if kittens are in heat, they are VERY vocal, stick their butts up in the air, roll on their backs more, their tail would be sticking up straight as an arrow, they lick themselves more in that area, and I also read somewhere that they have some sort of leakage from their vulva area. Is this true???? Thanks again IP: Logged |
