My one and a half year old, friendly cat started nipping (I think playfully) at our new 7-week-old kitten's neck. I'm not sure if he is trying to pick him up or cause him harm. Any ideas? Sandy IP: Logged |

I would keep an eye on him since he could easily hurt the kitten without meaning too. If he is otherwise not aggressive with the kitten it is probably okay, but I would still monitor them closely when they are playing. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Fleafly. Unfortunately, the nips are starting to become biting around the neck. The kitten isn't crying in pain, so I'm not sure what my cat is trying to do. I assumed when I brought this new kitten home, that my cat would just hiss and try to swat at it, but he has not done any of those things. This is something totally new to me. My cats play with each other by biting their necks. They have never broken the skin or injured each other. BUT you are correct in that with a kitten this could be very dangerous. As you said, do not EVER leave them alone together until this behavior goes away. Look for other signs of aggression. Make sure you are giving quality time to each cat alone as well as playing with them together - this way your older cat will know the kitten is not a threat to his place in your family. Maybe you could try one of those Feliway plug-ins that is supposed to relax cats. It has something to do with releasing pheromones, I believe. Good luck, and keep us posted!

I think this is normal playing as my 8 month old kitten and our oldest cat of 15 years do this often. They start out cleaning each others head and ears. It gets progressively more aggressive and they end up trying to bite each other under the chin. Check out these pics :-) http://hometown.aol.com/wtpooh3171/index.html I have never seen or felt any injuries from this play fighting. 7 weeks is very young though so continue to monitor any playtime until the kitten is bigger.
