Two months ago, I adopted this great kitten, Satie who is now a 4 months old male. He is adorable and very affectionate. I was told it was better for the cat to have a playmate and when I was ready for the new addition, I adopted another kitten (9 weeks old male, Bubba, I think an American bobtail). This happened 2 days ago. Now Satie who was so gentle behaves as a very jealous cat. He hisses and growls at him. I separate them and sometimes try to let them meet, while always being there. Unfortunately, Satie will try to chase the little one and to attack him (with his paws--no biting--I'm not sure whether or not he really takes his claws out). I noticed that the little one, Bubba, tries to fight back by doing the same now, although this is new and just a defense. He in fact seems to want to befriend Satie. Also I think I made the mistake to have the little one sleep in our bedroom and lock Satie out--I was now told I should not have disrupted Satie's routine, let him sleep in our bedroom as usual, and give the new cat his own private space. I just wonder: Will Satie warm up to that kitten and how should I introduce him the best? Should I, as a friend told me, let Satie fight a bit, because he needs to show who's boss, while of course being present? Is that true that I should try to not separate them so that really do get used to each other? Any advice? IP: Logged |

Don't let them fight. Your old cat is just jealous. Pay a lot of attention to him especially in front of the new cat, so he can see that you still love him. IP: Logged |

I agree with letting Satie sleep in your room and giving the new kitten his own private space for now. I would also keep them seperated whenever you can't be around to supervise until they are adjusted to each other. Slow introductions seem to work well. I would keep the new kitten in a seperate room for a few days, exchanging bedding and toys between the 2 cats during that time so that they can adjust to each others scents. Only introduce them for a few minutes each day for about a week. Just a few suggestions. Good luck. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I am hoping Maydays Mom won't mind. Below is a post of hers that I copied from another thread on this board: Maydays Mom: "Seperate the kitties into two seperate rooms. Take 2 towels and rub one each on both cats faces to attract their scent glands to the towel. Place the opposite towels under each kitties food bowl so they associate the smells of the other kitty with something positive such as eating. Keep them seperated for about a week and then swich their rooms. Leaving the other cats belongings in each room. Keep them seperated in each others areas for another week. Then take them to a neutral area and introduce them to each other. For each positive interaction praise and give treats. If there is a negative outcome try again. They will get it I promise." She said she works with rescue cats, so she should know what she is talking about! Good luck, and I'm sure your kitties will be liking each other in no time!
