My cat, Tigger is eight years old. For the past three to four months he has lost over half his body weight and in the duration of the last week he has lost the desire to eat, drink, and has no energy. Finally on Friday (Nov. 21) we took him to the vet. We just moved so we had to take him to a new vet and- well, this vet sucked, and I don't trust his diagnoses (get this- we walked into the doctors office and the first thing I noticed was it smelled like blood. The only reason we stayed was because my mom and I were afraid if we didn't see a vet that night, we might lose Tigger!). He took a leukimia test, which came out negative, and then proceeded to tell us it was kidney damage. He gave us an antibiotic and told us to go to a drug store and get Pedialyte, because he was very dehydrated. Then, on Saturday morning, when I went to go give Tigger his medicine, he had BLOOD all in his mouth and it was all crusty on the outside so he couldn't open up his mouth. He is only getting worse, and I don't know what to do. I feel really bad for my pet- but I have no money left because of the first doctor visit! If anybody knows of anywhere I can take my pet in central California where they will treat my pet for really cheap or nothing (wishful thinking...) or if you have any suggestions please email me at: ojess812@pacbell.net. Tigger has become apart of my family (we got him when I was six), and it kills me to see him in this state, as he is normally an energetic and fun-loving cat. Im so sorry. Maybe you can contact the SPCA or another animal shelter for help? Some will do low cost vet visits in certain situations. IP: Logged |

Blood in his mouth sounds very ominous indeed, but he may just have something called gingivitis, it is an infection of the gums and makes them very sore and bleed. It happens when plaque builds up on the teeth, must like what would happen to you if you didn't brush. It can make the teeth unstable and wobble so the cat finds it hard to eat, plus the soreness of the gums stop them wanting to eat. If it is this the vet will clean the teeth and pull any that need it under anaethestic. Its not uncommon in an 8 year old cat to have mouth problems and easily sorted, though not cheap. The second possibility is less good and that is that your cats has FIV, the cat equivilant of HIV and the resulting AIDS, they can get bleeding from their mouth and nose, lose weight very rapidly, they usually have a runny, smelly faeces too. If you cat does have the latter stages of FIV there is not alot the vet can do for your cat and it would be kinder to put him to sleep. The last possibility that I can see is that your cat has some sort of stomach problem that has caused the stomach to bleed and the cat is vomiting this blood up. In any of these situations the cat needs to see a good vet who will examine your cat properly. I cant say it sounds like kidney failure to me! IP: Logged |

Check with the SPCA and the Humane Society of the United States, they both have low cost clinics in some areas. The HSUS in Dallas was only 10.00 for an office visit. IP: Logged |

I have to agree that it does not sound like Kidney failure. My cat died from Kidney failure in December last year and he never had any blood in his mouth. He was very weak and skinny though. I have also never heard of giving an animal Pedialyte, I thought it was only for humans. A lot of places like the humaine society will treat animals for a discounted rate. Next time you get the kitty into the vet make sure to have them check the gums and teeth for infections. Also if a cat has not eaten or drank in a long time it can be very serious and cause liver and kidney damage. Dosent take months, just days or a week. So yes it is very possible. Usually when a vet tests a cat for feluek it is a combo test that also tests for FIV. Make sure to call and ask the vet if it is a combo test. Definately use the pedialyte. Your cat needs extra nutrients if it is dehydrated. IP: Logged |
