Our part persian cat of 13 years is nearly blind and both eyes are very foggy. Has been checked by a vet but nothing can be done. Is healthy and eating well and seems to be able to find his way around both in and outsides but very hesistant. Also seems to be meowing a lot. Can they find their way by scenses and has anyone else had a similar experience.

Hi Barry, One of my kitten fosters experienced a stroke during her spay that caused her to become deaf and blind. She uses her sense of smell to find her way to her food and water. She had to be fed a really raunchy smelling food so that she could find it. She had to be confined for atleast 3 weeks after so that she could find her litter box and not be confused. I have seen some improvement and she is starting to become reactive to light.
This is a different situation because the vet has hope she will regain most of her sight.
I think that animals adapt to injuries and impairments much better than humans do. It will take some time and patience. She should be able to get around using her other senses just fine.
Cats will mew alot after something traumatic happens to them. She is just expressing her confusion vocally. Tinkers did the same. She is probably hesitant because she is trying to find her bearings.

Blind cats learn their environment by smell and touch. They do well as indoor cats and live happy lives, one piece of advice though don't move the furniture or leave stuff on the floor. I remember one very funny, but also heart renching moment, when a friend of mine who's cat was blind moved sofa and the cat jumped up to get on it, falling flat on his nose and got up looking very confused.

But yes I do think your cat will be happy, he might need quite a bit of reassurance though whilst he adjusts.

I worry about the part where you say he can find his way around "outside". Without his sense of site this is very dangerous. He won't be able to see a predator coming nor will he be able to run away quickly. If you do let him outside I hope you are with him to keep him safe.

My 2yr old siamese mix is almost completely blind. I beleive she was born this way. She seems to get around the house pretty well but tends to jump at every little noise.
