I adopted a five year old cat, Henry. three weeks ago. For the first two weeks, he hid. Now he is exploring the house and showing his slighty nutty side. He seems to sleep all day, but come alive at night. he runs around and meows and keep me up. My real worry is that he loves to chew paper, plastic and carpet. He threw up last night and once in a while seems like he is gagging, but a I can't be sure. My question is that I worry about him constantly, especially when I leave the house. I worry that he'll chew on carpet or paper and choke, or that it gets lodged in his tummy and he'll get sick and I won't be there to help him. Are cats more indestructible than I give them credit for? I sometimes have trouble concentrating at work because I worry about him. Thoughts? IP: Logged |

Oh, I forgot to mention that he is an indoor kitty. Does this explain his hyperness, etc? IP: Logged |

Hi Cats, although dainty are fairly hardy animals. Mine have pulled off a few stupid moves that only a cat could walk away from - and they are also indoor cats! However, if they have favourite chewing items like bags, rubber bands, paper, string etc. I would do a onceover and cat proof your house. Put chemicals away and hide anything he deems edible. If it makes you feel better, put your cat in a completly cat safe room for the day with food and water and litterbox to keep your mind at ease. If he sleeps all day, he won't mind. As for the gagging, it could be a hairball or he is throwing up something that didn't agree with him. If it keeps up, take him to the vet to make sure nothing is stuck or wedged in his throat. Did you happen to see the contents of his barf? IP: Logged |

If your really concerned about him, try getting a kitty run for inside. They are light and durable and the kitty has like 6' of running space both ways. They are ajustable to your preference plus totally see through with no plastics or anthing he can chew!! Try giving him some kitty toys and put catnip in them. Maybe then he'll play with the toys and not paper and stuff... He's just adjusting to his new home. Most cats are nocternal. Mine sleep all day and prowl at night as well. IP: Logged |

I too was worried about my kitties during the day. I found the safest place to put them that is big enough for them to play and be safe is my bedroom. I make sure there is no paper, plastic or anything they can chew on. I "BABY PROOFED" my bedroom and got rid of every wire I could. I put their scrathing post in their along with all there toys, litter box, food, water, etc.....and of cource all they do is SLEEP on my nice big bed all day! IP: Logged |

Well, he's five years old and has made it this far without choking on something. The posts above are good. I have a good link for you regarding him keeping you up at night. Just click on this link and it will take you right to it. http://www.happypetmobilevet.com/showpracfaq.cfm?FAQID=76&Private=0 IP: Logged |

I think the only thing you really have to worry about is plastic. My cats love to play with plastic bags, but I'm afraid they might accidentally suffocate so I pick them up when I am gone. Try to pick up things that he could eat, and he should be fine. Mine have the run of the house and I have never had problems. One of them ate some plastic right in front of me the other day, I couldn't stop him. So far he has been fine. The main things to pick up are plastic and really fine strings. They like to eat the fine strings but not the thicker ones for some reason. IP: Logged |
