My girl is a strict indoor. She will never be allowed outside, mostly because we live on a main road, and I don't ever want to walk outside and see her squished in the street. She loves it inside and never tries to go out, because she doesn't know anything different. She has been to the vet for all of her shots, and tested for lukemia..she is negative. Should she be on heartworm meds (those once a month pills for prevention)or any other monthly treatments?? My dog always got a heartworm pill, but he went inside and outside. I am very unhapppy with my current vet ,and am still looking to replace them. I'd rather not ask them for meds, because the last time I did that, they gave me the wrong dose of Cestex(for the tapeworm) and they would have killed my little girl if I hadn't caught their stupid mistake.(BTW,3 or 4 of their ppl insisted the dosage was correct, then I asked the vet herself, and she told me it was not correct)I don't want her to take meds if she does not need to,but I truly believe in preventative care. Oh, and if anyone wants to reccomend a smart, capable, loving vet in Suffolk County (Long Island)NY..I'd appreciate that too!!!! IP: Logged |

I don't know about the rate of occurence for heartworm in your area, but I would think that since your cat is indoors its probably not necessary. IP: Logged |

I have to only indoor cats. One is 16, the other 12 and have never given them heart worm medicine. Just my experience, but never had a problem.

I don't give my cats hearworm meds either. If you do find another vet maybe you can discuss this with him/her...I'd imagine it would only be necessary if you live in certain areas where heartworm is a problem in cats. IP: Logged |
