I am gettin a 8 week old male cat. I have a 5 1/2 month old female cat, not spayed yet .. we plan to have her spayed the week we bring him home, it's just a matter of which day. Any advice? Will me cat hate me afterwards? I feel liek she's gonna think we don't like her anymore. What if the two of them don't get along? My kitty is pretty spoiled and loves attention and will do bad things to get attention!! Is it going to be double trouble?! IP: Logged |

Oh, and another concern is, will the new male kitten try to nurse from my female? Will these cause animosity between the two? I am so nervous. IP: Logged |

Is there anyway you can get your female spayed at least a week before you bring your new kitten home? Your female cat will not be feeling all that great after she is spayed and will need some time to heal. Having her spayed at the same time a new kitten is in the house may be a bit too much for her. She may even be more annoyed with the kitten than she would normally be if she wasn't spayed the same week the kitten was there. IP: Logged |

If you bring him home the same time you have her spayed she might associate the pain of being spayed with him. I agree with Chessmind that you should have her spayed and recovered before you bring him home. He wont try to nurse on her. He is weaned, and she wont be producing milk. Your kitty will probably like having a play mate around, especially since she is still young and playful herself. She will probably seek less attention from you b/c she will have the kitten to play with. It may help stop her negative attention seeking. As long as you don't freak out and make the cats nervous they should be fine. IP: Logged |

After I posted that, I thought about how bringing home the new kitten and then suddenly taking her somewhere else might upset her. But can she get preggo from an 8 week old male? That's what I am worried about. IP: Logged |

Kayliface: No, she can't get pregnant from an 8wk old kitten. I would'nt wait too long though to have her fixed once you get the male. I think male cats commonly reach sexual maturity around 6 - 9 months of age but depending on the individual cat this can be sooner or later. I had a male that seemed to begin showing "interest" at 4 months. IP: Logged |

Thank goodness! So I have at least a month or two before I have to get my kitty spayed then. I didn't want to do it right away anyway .. but I thought I would have to cuz my new kitty is a male. Thanks for the help everyone. IP: Logged |

The younger she is when you spay her the easier it will be for her. Younger cats recover quicker and don't gain as much weight as older cats can. Since she is already 5 1/2 months old I would get it done soon if I were you. IP: Logged |

I will give it two or three weeks w/ the new kitty and then I will get her spayed. I have a few other questions though about them .. what about food dishes? Should they each have their own? I plan to have a big dish of hard food for them to share, but will they eat from the same dish? How do I know who is gettin enough food?! And litter boxes ... I've heard that I should have more than one, will my current cat get peeved at the new one for using her litter box? IP: Logged |

I couldn't get the link to work for the picture. My cats have always shared litter boxes and food dishes without problems. I think it depends on the cat though. If they start having problems you might want to get an extra food dish and box, just see how they do. IP: Logged |
