My 10-year old male has caught a cold twice so far this year (2003). He sneezes horribly and I can tell generally feels awful. He has a clear drainage from his eyes, his nose is dry and crusty. I have two other cats and neither has caught a cold. Should I be worried that this has happened twice? IP: Logged |

Hello. Cats do get colds. Like humans, some more than others. However, cat colds can lead to upper respiratory problems and should be treated by a vet. The cold will usually last about 7-10 days (assuming no upper respiratory infection is present, in which case this needs to be treated by a vet with meds). Also, when cats have a cold they can't smell their food and often don't want to eat due to this. Because cats can't blow their own nose it's important for you to use a warm wet cloth (soft) and gently wipe his nose if you see any crusty 'snot' on it. Keep an eye on his eating and drinking habits. If it where my cat I would take him to the vets to get meds and rule out any respiratory infection. I don't know if your cat is indoor or outdoor. However, he should be kept inside until his condition has cleared up. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Chessmind. He is an indoor cat. Yes, his appetite has been impacted. I noticed this morning that the drainage from his eyes is not clear; it's yellowish. Last time he got this type of ailment he had been at the vet for a urinary tract infection. This started a few days ago so I'll watch him closely. The warm washcloth is a good idea. I tried to use a tissue yesterday and he howled, so I'm guessing it's very sensitive. Thanks again! IP: Logged |
