My 2-y.o. male just had a bowel movement and he was crying while in the box...he meowed a few times which he never does. I checked the "results" and it was well-formed, no blood. Can cats have trouble with this function occasionally?, i.e. could he have a touch of constipation and this was difficult for him? My first thought was UTI but there was urine in the box earlier so I don't think that's the problem, and he hasn't been going to the box repeatedly. Other than that crying, he seems fine. Hello. There are a few things that could cause your kitty to have a difficult time passing a stool: 1) In cats, constipation sometimes occurs if they have swallowed too much hair during their normal grooming. When hair gets into the digestive tract, it binds to the stool, making it harder and more difficult to pass. So, brushing him daily is a good way to help prevent this (not to mention it also helps with hairball issues). 2) A dirty litter box is not inviting to a cat and he may wait it out until fresh litter has been placed (or cleaned). In which case the stool will become harder as time passes and when he finally does decide to go it may be rather painful (hence the crying). 3)The intestines need large amounts of water to keep things moving smoothly. When water levels fall, stools get harder and drier and are more likely to stay in place. Is he drinking enough water?
4)Finally, constipation may be a warning sign of other, more serious problems, such as kidney disease, infected anal sacs or even a hernia. I hope your kitty feels better. Just try to keep the litter box clean and brush him daily. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the reply, Chessmind. I suspect it may have been hairball related. He is very long haired and is prone to hairballs, and I did notice some hair in the litter box. I gave him some malt hairball remedy so hopefully this will solve the problem. He does seem to be drinking well, he has a 'fountain' that he really likes. IP: Logged |
