Can you determine what kind of urine a glowing spot is using a blacklight? In other words, does human urine show up basically the same as cat or dog urine? Our landlords are trying to sue us for damage to a carpet in a closet next to a bathroom that had a severe plumbing leak (which they never fixed and it got worse and leaked into said closet), so I am looking for a reputable defense that I can use in small claims court. They had a disaster restoration company come in and test with a blacklight, so we bought one and sure enough there is urine, but our cats were never in that closet, and I suspect it would show human urine the same as cat urine. Hello. Welcome to the site. That's a really good question. From my understanding of backlights it can detect dog urine, human urine, cat urine/spray and many other high protein content fluids. The black light will also detect juice and soda stains. I think if you went to court this would be good evidence that a backlight can not determine %100 that the actual fluid (which was in your closet) is infact cat urine. I believe other tests would be required to determine this. The backlight alone is not enough evidence that it's cat urine. IP: Logged |

Check out this link: http://www.odordestroyer.com/More_information_about_the_Handheld_Blacklight.html I would take proof of the leak and proof that black lights don't differentiate between human and cat urine. Contact a manufacturer of black lights (preferably the brand they used), they should have some literature on what they do and don't detect. IP: Logged |
