Hey, i was just wondering how often people clean their litterboxes. I have two kittens and i clean the box daily, but once a week i clean the whole box with dish soap and water. I have noticed it does not seem to be dirty when i clean it and was thinking of cleaning it every two weeks instead. does this really matter? Anway just wondering how often everyone else cleans theirs.thanks IP: Logged |

daily of course. the bacteria in the faeces, if left to fester, is bad for both the cats and humans. ///ej IP: Logged |

Hi winnie, Depends on the sort of activity the cat box endured through the week how much I give mine a thorough cleaning. I sometimes give it a good thorough cleaning once a week or bi-weekly. I use laundry detergent and a bit of vinegar to help kill off the germs/bacteria. Even though it is being scooped out daily, they do tend to hit the sides of the litter box once in awhile with their urinating and bowl movements. My one cat gets infections easily in his private area, so it is important that the box is thoroughly cleaned out at least once a week or bi-weekly / as well as the scooping it clean daily IP: Logged |

The frequency that you have to clean with soap and water also depend on if you're using liners or not. I use litter pan liners and only wash with soap and water about every 4-6 weeks. I replace the litter and liner every week. [This message has been edited by footsie (edited 02-11-2004).] IP: Logged |

I'll be honest with you. We usually scoop every other day. We only fully clean out the boxes when they need it. I've never paid attention on how much time passes or not. We scoop every or every other day, like I said. We constantly add litter to keep it fresh. I know we should be a little more diligent with the cleaning. But, our system seems to work and the boxes never seem very bad. The cats never had problems with using the boxes. We probably should scrub out the boxes a little more often. I do it how my mom used to, that's how I learned. I never realized that people scrubbed out the litterboxes more often than I do. IP: Logged |

3 cats and 2 litterboxes here - I scoop a couple of times a day and clean/refill weekly. I don't have a problem with odor here at all. When I do a full clean I wipe the inside of the box out with paper towel and then use those new Lysol wet wipes on the box...works really well. I also have a Littermaid story (won't have one) someone I know his cat's tail got caught in the rake...his cat "killed" the litterbox he was so mad IP: Logged |

I have 2 kitties and two litterboxes. I scoop both everyday. I 'clean" and replace the litter every 3 weeks. I have no odors or anything and the litter I use seems to last long. IP: Logged |
