I need help getting through tomorrow, I have to put my cat to sleep. He is 17 yrs old had hyperthyroidism, doesn't make it to the litterbox anymore and limps. I hope I'm doing the right thing. I just don't know what to expect and I feel horrible taking him to the vet to put him to sleep. i wish we could do this at home where he is more comfortable. Anyone have any advice? Thank you IP: Logged |

here is a website that might be of some inspiration to you right now http://rainbowsbridge.com/Poem.htm All I can say is you are relieving your cat of anymore illness and discomfort. You are performing the final act of kindness any pet owner can perform...letting them go. It's hard to let them go - but it's even more difficult to let them continue to be ill with no hope of getting better, or continue to be in pain with no hope of it ending. Just think of your beloved cat as going over the Rainbow Bridge able to run and play like he used to, being pain and illness free. It's a really difficult thing to have to make the ultimate decision like this - one we all dread. But if you've exhausted all options and you think he is ready to move on...then it's probably time. He's probably let you know he's tired of being ill and in pain. Just remember him like he used to be and he'll thank you for letting him be free of his illness and pain. IP: Logged |

I am so very sorry 4 what u r feeling right now... i know exactly what u r going though and its very hard.... i had to go though the same process w/ my cat not to long ago and im still trying to deal w/ the loss as far as doing it at home wheer he is comfy im not sure if there is any where u live but where i live there r vet services that will come to ur home and do it 4 u... there r also places that can have a burial or creamation process afterwards that is very helpfull w/ the loss they also offer great support thought the hard time....i know it is a very hard decision to make but it sounds like u r doing what the cat would want and he/she will go in peace and be free...and that site that was mentioned in the earlier post is a very nice site it has helped me to....once again i am sorry 4 what u r going though and it will get better!!!! i'm so sorry. you should be with him now, comfort him, sing him his favourite songs, tell him all will be okay and that you love him very much. talk to him about the best times you had together, tell him everything you think he'd want to hear, and most of all, call his name out as much as possible. i'm sure he will feel loved right up to his last moments and beyond. ///ej ------------------ IP: Logged |

I don't knw how much help this may be, but most vets (around our area anyhow) will come to your residence to "euthanize" after hours. maybe you can talk to him/her and see if they will do that for you. Then the cat will feel more comfortable, and be happy where he is. Sorry, I know its hard, but just thik of how happy he'll be and that he'll be waiting for you in the eternal life afterwards! I'm very sorry. I just had to put my 18 year old Nakita to sleep a couple weeks ago. It really helped me to be there for her when the vet actually gave her the shot, I was petting her and making kissy sounds by her ears as she left this world. I know she wasn't comfortable there at the vet, but it would have been worse for her if I had just dropped her off and walked away. Staying helped me with a good sense of closure as well. I sorry you have to make your decision. I had to make the same decision not too long ago but if it's best for the cat then you'll agreed it was the right one. I also knew it was going to be traumatic for my cat to go to the vet, so to make it easier on him my vet recommended a little pill (auctually half of a very small pill) for the cat to take that made him drowsy. The pill helped because my cat was very calm during the ride and at the vet. If you have to go to the vet, perhaps you can ask the vet for the pill. Again, I'm sorry that you have to make that decision. IP: Logged |
