I'm a Humane Society foster parent who's home has been contaminated w/ringworm on 2 occasions this yr. Just confirmed 2 solutions w/my vet! 1) CARPETS. Bleach can be used on carpet in a carpet shampooer as a 10%-20% bleach solution added to the liquid reservoir after your've put in your water/shampoo ratios. The vacuum/carpet shampooer must obviously have metal parts (we have a Kirby which does both vacuuming & shampooing functions.) Then use bleach/water in a spray bottle around edges of carpet/floorboards w/a rag. 2) WALLS, DOORS & POROUS SURFACES. My vet has confirmed that a steam cleaner can be used for this purpose as long as it reaches a steam temperature of 180 degrees. Mine is a standard unit that goes to 200 degrees. He double-checked this fact by doing his own research, checking w/a University, and w/another vet colleague. I'm overjoyed & so hope this helps others of you . . . . Julie IP: Logged |

I also foster for my local shelter...this is good info. I've been fortunate enough to only have to deal with URI and coccadia so far IP: Logged |

I'd test that solution out on your carpet before you really begin. It maybe safe for pets and kill the ringworm, but it could also destroy the color of your carpet. IP: Logged |

why not remove the carpet in entirety? we weren't too happy with our carpeting in our house in italy, so we removed it in place of wood flooring instead. the other incentive was the fact that cat hair kept getting stuck on it. my husband's asthmathic, so that was another reason to strip it. thankfully no one uses carpeting in malaysia, it's usually parquet or marble flooring. easier to clean, more hygenic. not only does carpeting carry ringworm, it carries other mites and ticks and small bugs that are detrimental not only to cats, but to humans too. i'm not sure of the situation in your area, but the best alternative would be to go to ikea or home depot, and get something cheap. there are some easy to install flooring solutions, where you only need to fit "tiles" of wood into an appropriate area, and click and fit, sort of like a set of flat lego blocks. hope that helps. ///ej ------------------ IP: Logged |
