Hello. I was just looking at the feeding label on two of my dry food bags. This can't be right! Handsome (my cat) weighs 12.5 pounds (he's not fat). I feed him way more than what it says to feed him on the can/bag. He gets about 9-10 oz of soft food per day and has hard food available to him at all times. I think he eats about 1/3-1/2 cup of hard food per day. If I fed him what was on the label he would be so skinny! Would you please tell me how much you feed your cat(s) per day. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Sorry the picture is a little blurry. Basically it says if your cat weighs 10 lbs they should get 2/5 cup of dry food plus 1/2 of a 5.5 oz of soft food (per day). Or just 2/3 cup of dry food and no soft food (per day). Handsome would be skin and bones! [This message has been edited by Chessmind (edited 02-21-2004).] IP: Logged |

I have noticed this, except sort of in the opposite direction. Not so much with the cat, but with my dog. The directions say I should feed her 5 cans a day; I only give her 1 1/2 cans a day and she is a perfect weight. ?? IP: Logged |

I feed my 13-lb boy about 3/4 cup dry food a day, and sometimes he doesn't finish all of it. He is a big boy and is not at all fat or thin. My 12-y.o. girl gets about 1/2 to 2/3 cup of dry a day plus 1/5 of a small can, and on some days there is food left. She is pleasantly plump at 11 lb. and we are trying to get her weight down a bit. They are both eating Nutro's natural choice. IP: Logged |

Hi there if the dry food your feeding is a complete concentrated food then cats should not be fed more that 1/2- 1 cups per day as its a concentrated food so its higher in fats, iron and vitamins. When i worked for the animal adoption centre here in the uk we used to feed more dry and found that the cats were having either very runny stools or they were becoming constipated so the vet told us to reduce the amount they were having and this worked. Also since your cats are also getting canned meat the amount of dry needs to be reduced or his soft food reduced. But what my mum does with her cats is just put soft food out and hard and they eat what they want when they want as she says if they want to eat they will and if they dont they wont so i wuld go with what you feel is best and what makes your cat happy. I free feed my cats dry and canned they share about 4 cans of Fancy Feast per day (one of my cats will eat an entire can alone...he doesn't like dry food). Remember if you buy cheap cat food the daily requirements tend to be more since the food has less of the good stuff in it...the better quality food you don't need as much. And here is a link to a good way to judge if your cat is at a good weight. http://www.placervillevet.com/feline%20body%20condition.htm IP: Logged |

I put out 1/2 cup dry for each of mine (or a little more depending on which food Im using). I split a small or sometimes a large can of food between the six of them. The recommended feeding amounts on the back of the bags/cans are just guidelines so they may not be the correct amount for all cats. I've found that most of recommended feeding amounts are way too high for my cats. If your cat maintains on the amount your feeding than you must be feeding the correct amount. IP: Logged |

Hello. Elizavixen: Was the feeding label for the canned food only if you feed soft food only or was that 5 cans plus hard food? That does seem like a lot (even for a dog) Dolly: Thank you for your input. It seems like the amount you feed is pretty close to the feeding label on my bag. The thing is if Handsome ate the same amount as your male kitty he would be too thin. Charmedagain: I feed Handsome very high quality food. I'm not sure if they have Wellness cat food in the U.K; but that's what I feed him. I'm still waiting to get Newman's Own shipped in to see the label. So far I only have the hard food. Handsome will be 3 yrs. in June and he's always had this amount of food. According to my vet he's a very healthy kitty. I think if I gave him less food he would be under-weight. MaryNH: Thanks for the input on the amount of food you feed your kitties. I did see the weight chart when you posted it for someone else last week. It's a good visual guidline. He's at the proper weight. He's actually very muscular. Maybe that's why he weighs in at 12.5 lbs, but looks like he's at a proper weight. Nern: Thank you for telling me how much food you feed your kitties. It seems like you and Dolly and MaryNH feed around the same amount (or close to it) of food for your cats. I realize the feeding labels are just a guidline, but I'm feeding Handsome about 3X the amount recommended! Handsome has always had great vet care and excellent check-ups. He's never had any health problems. He's always in great form (mentally and physically). The thing is I am beginning to wonder now, if maybe he just has a high metabolism. He sure has a lot of energy and exercises (plays) a lot. What do you all think? I would still like to hear from others on how much you feed your kitties. Your input in very much appreciated. Thanks! i find feeding labels for cats pretty vague. one packet told me to feed my kitten, who weighs 3.5 kgs, something like 1/2 cup. which is too little. another said to feed 1 cup, which is more like the proper amount, and another said to feed 3/4 cup! also alot of labels ive read only have the age of the kitten as a guide instead of having both age and weight. which is silly because if you have a big breed kitten like mine you cant go by age, its just not enough food. if your cat can control its feeding just have the food out all the time i say. Chessmind: It was canned food only. Mind you, she is 100lbs. It said feed 1/2 can twice daily per 20 lbs. That comes out to 5 cans. If I gave her 5 cans a day, first I would be bankrupt (that would be like $9 a day), second, she would be HUGE! As far as the amount I feed the cat: he gets 1 can of Fancy Feast a day and is allowed to free feed dry food. IP: Logged |

Chessmind, I think you're probably right with regards to metabolism. Let's face it, there are people who can eat as much as they want and not gain an ounce (I'm not one of them ) and there are others who have to watch every bite they eat. Sounds like Handsome is a very active and healthy boy! IP: Logged |

Thanks everyone for telling me how much food you feed your kitties. It seems like Handsome is the odd ball out, being as he is fed way more than any of your kitties. I'll ask my vet about him possibly having a high metabolism. I'm glad I have not answered any posts about how much to feed a kitty. Can you imagine if I was the only one that replied and I suggested that they feed them as much as Handsome!? Then a few months later they would post again saying their cat was now 25 pounds and if this was normal!? Also, you should all be glad that I have not done any petsitting for your kitties. By the time you came back, your kitties would have to be rolled out the door, they'd be so fat. Kyle101-There is a post by MaryNH about cat paws. If you have any pics of Pepe's huge paws that would be fun to see them posted. Elizavixen: LOL FMgurl43: Thank you for the input. Dolly: I think you're right. This does seem to be the case with people too.

Here is a helpful favorite link of mine. My cats and dogs are self feeders for dry food. I also give\ a small size cat wet for the cats and regular size can wet (pro plan) for the dogs every morning. All are the appropriate weight. I say, whatever seems to be working for you and your cat keep up with it. IP: Logged |

MyPetTherapyDog: Hello. Thanks for the link. I read the whole thing. I was glad to see the link answered on of my questions: That pet food should be at room temp. and not too cold. I slightly warm (very slightly) his soft food for him. Handsome loves it like this, but I am wondering if heating it even just a tad (in the microwave) removes nutrients from the food. I read that animals like their food slightly warmed, because it's like a fresh kill to them. Anyone know if it takes away nutrients? I suppose I could ask the people that make his food (Wellness Pet Food). Thanks! IP: Logged |

I suppose it would depend on the temperature and the length of time you are heating it. I don't think heating it for a few seconds would cause much (if any) nutrient losses but Im really not sure. Anyway, if you find out for sure from the company let me know. I thought cats preferred food at room temperature so I never heat mine up unless its left overs out of the fridge...then I just heat if for a few seconds to try and get it to room temperature.
