Hi all, My 12-y.o. girl has been behaving a bit unusual lately and I'm trying to figure out why. She will cry for food even when there is some in her dish (dry food), and if I go over to the dish and shake the food or pretend to add more, she will start eating it. She will have eaten the food from the centre of the dish and there will be some left around the edges when she starts crying for more. I'm wondering if her vision may be affected and she's having trouble seeing objects outside her central vision, or perhaps she can't smell it because it's not, literally, right under her nose. She doesn't seem to be having trouble otherwise with regards to vision. I'm not too worried as she will eat if you shake the dish (she had stopped for a couple of days but is back on it again, the vet checked her out), but I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed this behaviour. did the vet check her teeth? If a cat can't smell their food they won't eat - if she's got a dental/gum infection going on it'll affect her smell. I used to go through this with a cat I used to have - she was prone to dental issues and everytime she needed a dental her gums would get inflamed and she'd stop eating. Or try some canned food - the smell usually entices a cat to eat (dry food diet only isn't good for cat's teeth they have recently found out - the buildup of dry food can cause cavities much like potato chips on people's teeth).
