I adopted a 3 year old female spayed British Shorthair who weighs approx. 13 lbs. last Tuesday. She was from a household of 3 cats of an owner who pasted away. Since getting her home, I've kept her in a quiet place to be by herself. My question is : I know it's normal that a cat doesn't eat for a couple of days from the stress of being in a new household but how long should I wait before her appetite comes back? She hasn't even had any water for nearly 3 days. How can I induce her to drink or eat? Someone said they could have liver problem if they don't eat for 3 days, is this true? I'm worried that she is missing her home and mates and more stressed out than normal. Do you think she will come around before it affects her health? IP: Logged |

Hello. Not eating or drinking for 3 days is very serious. I would give her some water through a clean dropper right away. Put some soft food on her paw so she will lick it off and get some food in her. I would also take her to a vet right away, so they can give her some fluids. Also they are changing the forum boards here. The new boards are here if you want to post this message again in the new forum boards. http://www.auspet.com/new_forum_message.html IP: Logged |

Get her to vet now. Three days is not good and could cause serious problems.....let us know how she is doing IP: Logged |

Been to the vet and had her checked out. She received some fluid and food. Vet said to continue giving her food by syringe until her appetite returns. Received a formula from vet : I been feeding her a soupy mixture of Hill's Prescription a/d using the syringe. I will continue this until she starts to eat on her own; she has been taking in some water on her own. Will be keeping an eye on her. So far she seems to be doing ok, just still depress. It's hard on animals when their people pass away. I'm glad she has you to take her in. She will come around with a lot of love and attention. I hope the other kitties got equally caring homes. IP: Logged |
