![]() ![]() ![]() Hi everyone. I'm just wondering if some could share with me the age of your toy female dog when she went into heat for the first time. I know anytime after 6 months is the norm, but have also heard that small dogs can have it earlier. Graysie, my sweet maltese/shih tzu girl is scheduled to be spayed tomorrow. She turned 5 months on 6/28 is now 6.6 pounds. Something has come up and I am considering putting off her surgery till later in the month, but I'm a little paranoid that she'll have her first cycle before then. I really want to have it done before her first heat. Can any of you share your experiences with me please? Anyone have a toy breed that had her first heat before 6 months? Thanks! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Since I'm new, I've been scouring all the messages and noticed this one didn't have any replies. To me, I'd be interested in knowing this too. Does anyone have pups that are old enough to have been through this yet? Or, what age would be a good age to spay? Sue Kirby IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I had Winnie spayed when she was five months. the vet told me that around 6-7 months is when she would have gone through her first heat. it could be different for other dogs. i got it done as soon as possible. i recommend getting it done as soon as possible as well!!! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() our vet recommended we get Harley spayed before her first heat cycle--she said it reduced the chances of her developing certain cancers. i think it was done around 5 months and she was small too, probably about 5 lbs. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() my little havanese 'holly' had her first cycle when she was about 6 months old. it lasteed between 2 and 3 weeks. toward the end when the bitch is in 'full blosom' she might start to stary on her own to find herself a boyfriend. thats what holly did. she trotted down the treeline for 12 acres. thank god my boarder-jack brought her home. she was out there only for 5 minutes. hope that help if it didnt let me know IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() They stay in heat for a few weeks .Best to get them spayed ,if possible and most vets go by developement and weight before spaying ,before their first heat or you could have a mistake baby and 5 to 7 months old is way too young to be having babies .Not that anyone would intentionally let them but if they have a way of getting down the street to the nearest male ,they will.If your vet says the time is good ,then do it now . ![]() ![]() ![]() Hi, I have a mini dauchshund, she went into her first heat at 8 months old. If you don't plan on getting her spayed, I have found that the best diapers, are the denim kind. Then do not buy the pads the pet store sells you, they are much too expensive. I buy reg. mini pads, and cut them in half. Hope this helps you! Susan Oh and the first heat, has a very foul odor in most dogs, so you'll know it's coming....yuk! IP: Logged |
