i've posted about this before but i don't seem to be getting anywhere with my 8 month old shihpoo.he won't leave people alone when they come over to visit he jumps on them and tries to constantly give them puppy kisses i tell him no and he don't stop so i put him in the other room and while he's in the other room all he does is whine as loud as he possibly can.i've been doing this for months but it's not working.he's around people most of the time when i take him for walks he gets lots of attention from the kids in the neiborhood.but he still freaks out when he sees anyone even if it's someone he's familiar with.i understand that he's only trying to be nice to company but it's getting annoying because he takes it too far.he just won't give up when someone is here.any ideas?

My aussie x does the same thing. She get so excited its overwhelming to visitors. She does this to me when I come home too so I've been totally ingnoring her for a few minutes til she calms down a bit and then I make her sit before I will pet her. This seems to be working really well but now I need to have visitors come over and practice this with me. In one of the books I read the woman said she trained her dogs a command "enough" which she had her visitors use if the dogs continued to pester them....the dogs understood that this meant to leave the visitors or the owner alone. Im going to try working on this with my aussie x next. Anyway, incase your interested the book is called "The Other End of the Leash" by Patricia McDonnell (an applied animal behaviorist) and she really gives the reader a good understanding of how dogs learn. I was watching Animal Planet not too long ago and they said that excessive puppy kissing can be a compulsive disorder that some puppies have. The owners said as the dog got older it had gotten worse. The lady on the show said her dog never stops licking her and it was a big problem. They tried behavior classes which in some cases work for some dogs, but for this dog they ended up putting him on some type of medication to help with the compulsion, he just would not stop. I would run it by my vet and see what he says.
