I am so happy to find this site.I am not sure if this is the right place for me to post this.I am April.I bought a Peek-a-poo yesterday. We love him so much.We named him Coby.We purchased him thur a breeder in the next town.I did not know the breeder. But my question is,she told me to feed him can food.He is 7 weeks old.I have fed him but now last several hrs he has began to have diarrhea. What can I do for this.I am letting him drink water like she told me.Any suggestions?I am so worried. Thanks so much for your time.April IP: Logged |

Hi April, Congratulations on your new puppy and welcome to the board!!! Just one quick question for you. Are you feeding your puppy the same food that your breeder was feeding him? I only ask because sudden changes in a puppies diet, such as switching food brands or food, can cause such problems as those you are experiencing. These aren't the only issues that can cause diarrhea, but they are couple that I am familiar with. Although, if the problem does persist, I would highly recommend taking your puppy to a vet if you haven't done so already. (Plus, it is a good idea to take him to the vet to check and see that he is healthy and has no other problems even if he wasn't having the diarrhea.) Best of Luck, IP: Logged |

Thanks Kristi for taking time to post.Yes I am feeding it the same kind.I was taking my dog Monday to the vet to let my vet check him and to show him the shots the breeder had already gave him. Also I know the vet can tell me Monday about the diarrhea but I was just wandering if I should try to go ahead and get him to a ER Vet tonite or first thing tommorrow.I sure don't want nothing to happen to my baby.We had been wanting a peek-a-poo for awhile and so so thankful to have found him.I will watch him very careful and if he makes any changes or gets lifeless I will take off. Thanks again.april [This message has been edited by April (edited 11-29-2003).] IP: Logged |

No problem April! Well, at least you know that the food brand change is not the cause. Glad to hear that you are taking your pup to the vet on Monday. He/She will be able to better diagnose the problem and give you some helpful pointers. And like you are already doing, have fresh water available at all times, the last thing you need is a dehydrated puppy to add to your problem! As far as taking your pup to a veterinary ER, it all depends on how you feel. Does the diarrhea seem severe? If yes, then you may want to consider going to a vet. ER; and if not, then you are probably safe in waiting till Monday. I know when I first got my two shih-poos I was a nervous wreck about everyting! Lets just say I was a frequent visitor in my vets office I can definitely relate to your feelings of nervousness! My two dogs actually had a diarrhea problem as well when we first brought them home. So, of course, being a nervous new dog owner, we did bring them to our vet. He mentioned to us that it was not an unusal problem in puppies, and that it usually clears up in a short amount of time (for us about a week). But, that is not to say that there could not be a more serious problem. Thus, your nervous feelings about your baby are perfectly normal! Just give Coby lots of love and attention and have fun!!! Sorry I couldn't be of any more help! Let us know how things turn out, [This message has been edited by MyBabyShihPoo (edited 11-29-2003).] IP: Logged |

He needs to be on dry food for one .He possibly has coccidia .I would go ahead and go to a vet today and get a fecal ,coccidia can be treated with albon ,if you don't he could get a sugar drop ,give him some honey on your finger and take him to a vet today and then change him to a good dry food .Can food is not the way to raise a puppy . Just a note: As far as the canned food is concerned. I have spoken with numerous vets about feeding a puppy dry or canned food. All of them were confident in saying that either, or both, were just fine. Each of them said that canned food only would be an ok option for the first month, but one may want to consider mixing in a little dry food as well to add some solidity. Yes, the canned food does contain higher amounts of fat, but at that young of an age it will not cause problems. The dog will receive an equal amount of nutrition either way. For the first month with my two puppies, I fed them both dry and canned mixed together As a matter of fact, the dry food (for puppies) alone was too hard for them to chew! Just my two cents, IP: Logged |

I know that some vets say it is okay .But all vets I have ever talked to said the faster they get off any type can food the better off they will be in the long run and not to even start with it unless it is a necessity. The only time I ever use any can is when a puppy won't eat ,I mix the dry with the can to encourage eating .I start them out with dry and only a few times have I ever needed to use a can product . Dry food is better in my opinion and in all the vets around here as it strengthens the teeth from an early age .There are such types as small puppy bites ad you can get them in just about any dry food ,most eat it fine .But if you have to use can ,use it mixed and then taper off with the can food .It softens the stoole and does nothing to promote the general health of the puppy .Too much fat in it .That is my opinion . Apparently our opinions differ in this case. I must agree to disagree I absolutely agree with you about eventually phasing out canned food from a puppies diet (except using it as a treat once and awhile). Yes, canned food does contain high levels of fat, and for that very reason I do not continue using canned food in my dogs diet beyond one month. Having used canned food mixed with dry food on my two puppies for their first month, I can personally attest that their teeth are in superb condition and have had no health problems to this day! It is my conviction (as well as the numerous vets I have spoken to) that canned food (mixed with dry) does in fact provide adequate nutrition for a puppy. This is especially true for small breed dogs. For larger breed dogs, a dry food only diet is an excellent option due to the greater caloric density. Everyone has their own opinions on this issue, and everyone is entitled to his, or her, own opinion! It would be awfully boring if we all thought the same That's my opinion for whatever it is worth, IP: Logged |

Who is your vet ? I would love to note the other side of the issue and have vet reference to it .Since alot of people ask that question it would be great to have noted both vet sides of any issue . My line went down well I see .Yes,it would get very boring .LOL! Best thing for her to do is to ask her vet ,that would settle all issues as far as we were concerned . I promote vet first health care for any animal .Vet from day one helps to make sure that what you do is always the right thing even if some of them are a little dingy and there are some really dingy ones out there .LOL! Once ,I had a little problem and ask 5 vets the same question and got 3 different answers ,so I got on line ,did research and then ask a few really top breeders and got this answer "Try and find you an old hippy vet ,they listen and try to help, have more insight into the animals ,but you can't have mine " LOL ! PS ...I told them this back " The problem with that is where I live where the 60's is just arriving ,so now I gotta wait 50 yrs to get an old hippy vet" LOL ! ilovemaltipoos, First, I loved the stories. LOL The age of the vets around this area are actually quite the opposite from you. Most of them are all up there in age. As a matter of fact, majority of them are 50-60 and some a little older than that. So, hippy vets they are. LOL I definitely agree, second opinions (and third, fourth, etc if necessary) coupled with research are the best route! I doubt this particular issue will ever be able to come to one firm answer one way or another due to the multiple opinions regarding it. Like you mentioned, seeing one's own vet and making a decision from there is probably the best bet! The vets: Jones, Jerome, Watts, Bloss, Seidler, just to name a few. I think I have completely exhausted this subject, so I will try and leave it alone now! LOL Kristi [This message has been edited by MyBabyShihPoo (edited 11-30-2003).] IP: Logged |

Do you have a digital camera. If so do you have them stored someplace like www.imagestation.com That is where mine are. If you do. write down the URL(properties) and put them inbetween these [img]URL[/img] Don't forget to take the letters URL out. ------------------ IP: Logged |
