Does anyone have any suggestions? We have a 17 week old shih tzu bichon cross that has been sleeping in his crate from 10:00 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for the past 11 weeks (when we got him at 6 week). There was never a peep out of him for all that time but in the last week he has been whining all night long and last night got so bad we had to take his crate and all to the far end of the house so we could get some sleep. Should we just continue to ignore him as we have been doing. I don't work so am home with him most of the time and I think he just doesn't want to go in there by himself. Our room is not an option. I would continue to ignore the whining unless you think there might be another reason for it other than he just wants out of the crate. Paying him any attention during his whining will just reinforce him to continue whining. Good luck. IP: Logged |

Hello Jarodsgamma! We went through the same thing with our 6 month old Shih Tzu. What we did to over some this is try our bext to tucker her right out before bed. Long walk, lot's of play, an dthen we found she was so pooped she had to sleep.... ------------------ IP: Logged |

Ive had this problem with my first dog. I would agree with previously posted messages and try your best to really tire her out. make sure she doesn't have to pee or anything. If you make a lot of short trips to the store for milk or bread or something(30 min) then crate her then. that way you can't hear her whineing. And- Never put her in her crate when she's bad (for a punishment, tell her she's rotten or bad and ignore her, this is the greatest form of punishment for almost any toy dog) and if she REALLY REALLY jsut doesnt like the crate and won't go in it on her own then drag it into the kitchen and feed her in it. hope this helped let me know how it goes happy Holidays IP: Logged |

Ranger used to do this, and we just ignored him. Even moving his crate would be giving him attention, I would think! Then, he may continue whining being in a new place. Their crates are supposed to be in one place consistently. I hope he stops soon, I know what that can be like IP: Logged |

Thanks for the suggestions from everyone. I totally agree we just are going to have to ignore him. The night before last he slept all night then last night woke an hour after he went in and whined for two hours. Think we'll get some earplugs. The frustrating thing is that he was so good for the 11 weeks. I think he is just getting too attached to us (but I guess that is not a bad thing). As far as the exercise at night, we live in Alberta, Canada and it has been -20 degrees celsius so too cold to go out walking. When summer comes we will be doing that every night. IP: Logged |

Maybe you could toss a ball down a hallway over and over. One person on each end. He would love that. Good luck. ------------------ IP: Logged |
