Hello Everyone. I sure have appreciated all your comments, advice and support! I sure am in need of a lot more of it. :-) We went to our Vet appointment yesterday. Precious was a huge hit! She Quickly became a major distraction for Dr. Steed's entire staff. Dr. Steed has put Precious on an anti-biotic and an antihistamine. He said it is time we get to the bottom of her nasal drips and breathing noises. I agree. He wants to rule out allergies or a cold, so she is now on meds for those. He did several other tests on her to rule out other (more serious) illnesses. She was negative on all those. Praise God! I really hope these meds work! If it doesn't, then the next step is to take her to a specialist. Dr. Steed said that this is common in smushed face breeds. He explained that their nasal tubing (for lack of a more Tech. name for it) is longer then their snouts allows, when the puppy breaths in, the excess tubing collapse on itself , hence making a snorty, nasal sound. Some dogs snout will expand as they grow, thus pushing the snout out and allowing more room for the tubing, and solving the problem. BUT, in some cases, the dog has to have an operation to correct it. Who knows how much that would cost?!? So far she has had two doses of the antihistamine but, no improvement or change what so ever. Well, she has been a little hyper. I clear up right away after taking an antihistamine, so I'm not hopeful that this is allergies. In any case, it is reassuring to know that this is fixable. I guess we just take it one step at a time. IF she has to have surgery, I hope pet health insurance will help pay for it. Does anyone have any advice, experience, comments or encouragement? I sure need all those about now. Precious's Mommy, IP: Logged |

The problem is common in pugs ,shih tzus ,pekinese and other flat face dogs . I wish you all the best and hope she does not have to have the surgery .I know some that have and some have not had to have it .But all of them had the snorting problem . Hoping all goes well for you and your baby .Take care and keep us informed . IP: Logged |

Precious is absolutely ADORABLE!!! Sorry, but I don't have any tips or info. for you. My vet checked my two shih-poos for any nasal problems such as the one Precious has, but found no problems. Thank goodness! I hope the best for Precious!!! Keep us updated, IP: Logged |

Thanks! She is just as sweet and lovable as she looks. She has been doing fantastically since Doodles has gone. She sleeps through the night without a pep out of her and is showing no signs of missing her den mate. Aside from out nasal worried she is the perfect little puppy. Has anyone ever know or heard of anyone having to have this surgery? Precious's Mommy, IP: Logged |

Hi Sunday, My poodle tends to get a drippy nose but not all times of the year. Usually in spring and summer. Also for some strange reason at all of the dog parks I have brought her too. I don't think its the grass, because we have plenty around here I have even wondered if she is allergic to other dogs. Thankfully not Rufus. Just a thought, what if she was allergic to your other dog. IS it possible something like that could happen I wonder. I have not heard of anyone having the nasal surgery done, but the specialists that they send you too out in Riverside are great. I do know someone that has gone to the allergist with their dog(a famliy friend) which they love. Idon't like the reason for going to the vet but love seeing everyones dogs. Do you have your Precious on pet insurance already? If you do then it should be covered. What branch do you go thru. Usually with some pre-existing illness they will not cover it. Thankfully I had insurance before anything started happening with Sasha. They charge you, you pay and you submitt the receipts and the form signed by the vet and you usally get repaid with a week or so. How is doodles doing with his pal Precious? ------------------ IP: Logged |

Precious is still getting formula 3 times a day (the kind for 8 wk old puppies) as well as 3 servings of canned puppy food (Her favorite flavor is beef & chicken) and some dry crunchy puppy food for snacking on. I've kept her on the same brand of food her breeder had them on, Pedigree. Her nose has cleared up. She has been on the medication for almost a week now. She has to take the meds for 10 day. Who knows, maybe in the next 4 days she will show a dramatic change. For now, I am please that her nose is not running any longer. It is a huge improvement already. With her nose clear, the sounds are not as prevalent. Now the only time her breathing sounds are real loud are when she has been playing hard. This has not effected, at all, the joy she has brought into our home. It is a minimal concern at worst. I figure that we will deal with this one step at a time. The meds are helping, she is still growing, and if and when the time comes, we will do whatever we have to do. Thank you so much for all the encouragement and advice. I'm checking out every possibility for a non-surgical solution. You all are a blessing! Precious's Mommy, IP: Logged |

Precious looks just precious! My parents have a Peekapoo and he's about 17 yrs old and since I can remember, he's always had breathing problems. He snores SO loud that people can hear him on the phone even when he's on the opposite side of the living room. He even scares him self awake because he's so loud! Sometimes he can't breathe and starts heaving and it looks like someone with asthma. Their vet says that surgery isn't for him. I hope everything's ok with Precious! IP: Logged |

My baby just went to the vet today, and he said the same thing! Apparently her little nose isn't large enough to allow for sufficient air passage. We are going to wait several weeks to see if he nose grows, but if not, she will have to have surgery I guess its a fairly simple technique, done with lasers. Without the surgery, she may develop serious problems later on due to her labored breathing (enlarged heart, weakened diaphragm, etc). My poor baby! Good luck with Precious; Bella and I will be praying for her that she doesn't need the surgery! IP: Logged |
