does anybody here shave their shih poo? or any poo mix?
bella had to have stitches in for the past two weeks and during this time and it was near impossible to brush her underside and legs, she now has really bad matts.. i have made an appointment at a groomers for friday.. i have never been to this groomer and am a little nervous about the whole thing. i'm hoping they can shave her body and cut her face short, so that it blends with the body.. if anybody cuts their dog like this could they post a pic please!

btw how does everybody find a favorite groomer? i really don't know anyone to ask.. the one near me that is very well known wants $60 to shave her (way too much in my opinion).. thanks

I shave bellies all the time ,males and females both .Easier to keep clean and more sanitary .Just get a good groomer . 40 to 60 is about the price here too to get one groomed ,although there are those I have heard of that charge less .I would stay with my baby though while being groomed .I have lately heard on another board of some horror stories about groomers .But you have to trust the person you take your baby to .Hope you find a good one near you ..

yeah i've heard plenty of stories lately about tranquilizers being used, cutting the dogs (and not telling the owner) and such.
the one i made the appointment at seems good. i am going to pass by it today and take a look inside, if i don't like what i see i will cancel.. i just would like to try to avoid petsmart, i rather find a groomer within my neighborhood and stick with them.. i like grooming bella myself but i think it wouldn't hurt to have a groomer to take her to for a shave a couple of times a year! she is black and it's pretty hot down here..
btw the one i am taking her to told me it would be between $35-45.. sounds more reasonable to me than $60..

Yes and I have heard about how when oneleft their baby at one ,it came up missing and another was hanged by the groomer ,had it tethered on a cage and knocked the things over and broke its neck .A friend of mine Linda will not leave Buttercup or Trixie either with a groomer over 10 minutes alone .She desn't trust any of them .I know there are good ones out there though ,just as there are bad ones ,just have to research,see who in the neighborhood takes whom where and then try one .All you can do ,I guess .What about your vet ? Do they have a groomer on duty ? Here at mine they have 2 all the time on duty .Maybe your vet knows a really good one also .

You could ask other dog owners where they go and their opinions of the groomers. Ask at the vets while you are there or at dog parks. People always like talking about their dogs so you don't have to feel like you are pulling nails out of them. I do my own poodles. But if I had to bring her somewhere I would go to the place that the lady dopwn the street takes her poo and has been going there for many years. Just ask around. Also ask if the groomers are certified. And have gone thru the nessary training thru the grooming schools. Do the have certificates. I would think anyone that gone thru it would be more than happy to show the certificates.

i can't ask my vet for recommendations (which i would like to do) because they have a groomer on site there.
the only reason i won't take her there (and this may not sound good) is that the groomers there are male and spanish speakers, solely.
i just think bella might be more calm with a woman, and i don't speak any spanish.
do you think i should just get over that and take her to the one at the vet or go to this other one i found?
the one i found does not come recommended by anybody but i heard about while looking on the internet. the guy that owns the place did a dog grooming video.

oh my gawsh, if i hadn't already found a groomer before now, I'd be terrified! I never heard of stories like that.. oh my, if something happened to my baby I would LOSE IT!

The good news is I found a grrrrrrreat groomer and I really like her. Bailey doesn't even get "skiddish" when we go and he's gone about five times now.

Bellasmommy, it's a coincidence that I read this post today because i just took Bailey to the groomers.... and I have always had her scissor cut him, but I wanted him shorter this time (BUT NOT SHAVED). Well, when I picked him up, he was shorter but not as much as I assumed and she told me that it was the shortest she could scissor cut him without it looking choppy -- and if I wanted to go shorter, he'd need to be shaved. And he still has his really fine, puppy hair (soft and fluffy) and that just won't look good for a shave.....(she seems to think he is going to stay that fine. So, with all THAT being said, I guess the question on shaving would depend on your bella's coat. Is it fine, fluffy, fly-away-ish? If so, then I would ASSUME that shaving wouldn't be very good....but i'd be curious to see what she (?) looks like with a shave. Cuz I've seen lots of shihtzu's that are shaved and they look good (but the coat is totally different with the poodle mix in there).
