![]() ![]() ![]() Okay, two things: First, I want to get Maggie a run for the yard because she absolutely loves to run around out there but it isnt fenced in. How can I prevent her from running so fast that she hurts herself when she gets to the end of the run? I dont want to get one so long that she gets tangled around trees in the woods, but I dont want her to choke. Anyone know what I mean? Second, I called the woman that I bought Maggie from because I wanted her to send me some pictures of Maggie's parents (for her baby book, of course). She told me about one of her Chi's that just had a litter but they were born early. She said they were each only half a pound and she tried to save them but they were just too little. I thought it was so sad. She said the mom looks in corners for her babies because she doesnt know they are dead. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() When you say a "run," are you speaking of a line type of device? If yes, I use those for my pups, and it works wonderfully since we don't have a fenced in yard. Fortunately, a good portion of our yard is treeless, so we don't run into any problems with them tangling themselves up in trees. So, I am not quite sure on what advice to give you about that particular situation...maybe someone else will have an idea. As far as your concern in regards to her running so fast that she will hurt herself when gets to the end of the line: I am sincerely sorry to hear about your friend's tragic loss with her chis. I can relate to some degree due to having been in a similar situation. I have fostered numerous cats awaiting adoption in my past, and one in particular just showed up at our house one day. She (the cat) had no collar, no micro-chip, nothing, and was rather skinny. So, I, of course, took her in, cared for her needs, and waited for potential adopters. In the meantime, I took her to the vet. for an examination, shots, testing for any health issues, etc. While at the vet., I wanted the vet to determine if the cat was old enough to be spayed. And after some checks, we discovered that she was pregnant. A short while later, she gave birth to 5 beautiful and perfectly healthy kittens. 4 out of the 5 kittens were adopted out into loving homes, but mom and 1 kitten remained. A wonderful family came buy one day to see the kitten and mom, and meet me. After about an hour with mom and kitten they were in love, and wanted to adopt both of them. The family was "investigated", for lack of a better term, to find out if they passed qualifications. They did...match made!!! Unfortunately, one day there was a tragic accident involving the kitten which took her life. [This message has been edited by MyBabyShihPoo (edited 03-03-2004).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I do have her on a harness. All of the leashes were too big for her anyways. Yes I was talking about the same thing that you have for your dogs. Maggie just runs so fast thats why I am worried that she will be hurt when she gets to the end of the line. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Okay, just making sure I was understanding you correctly. Yes, the harness should be fine and probably won't cause her any harm. I know with my two pups, before they learned the limits of the line, they would take off like a mad man (or shall I say mad dog, hehe ![]() IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hey If your talking about a tie out type of run the i would suggest getting one from above. You can get a line from you house running to a sturdy tree (like a clothes line) Then from the top attatch your lead on a pulley. Now your dog cont get strung up on a tree as long as the path way is clear. Also get a harness ( one the she can just step into, as opose to one that goes around her neck and center, this way there no choking, or coughing) An easier way would be to jsut get a dog run build in. Or even an "Ex-Pen" ex pens are VERY easy to move around, the sizes vary from small to large and they are VERY portable. Get her one designed for a large- X-large breed that way she has nice high sides as well lots of room to run. Let me know how you make out CLAIRE IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() They have the underground border systems. These work great as well. The dog can not cross the bordered area! Go to Pets mart and they have them. You can fence off like 5 acres with one kit, and the collar comes with it. its like $200 but well worth it. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi goofie_newfie686, The harness that I have for her right now is the kind that goes around her neck and center. What is the kind that she steps into? Is that something she can wear all the time, or something I would put on her when she is about to go out? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Are you using like a figure 8 ? There are other type harnesses ,jut take a visit to petmart or petco and they can help you find what is right for her .A run is a good idea ,I like the underground ones also ,those work really well with larger dogs in wooded areas ,may work for her too. ![]() ![]() ![]() Nance~ To see a step in harness click on this link: (Although the picture does show a big dog, the harnesses do come in small sizes as well as large. I use a slightly different harness on my pups than the one shown on the link, but NOT the kind that goes around the neck though. The kind I use and the step in type both work very well.) And yes, a harness can be worn by your dog at all times if you so desire. A dog wearing a harness is just like a dog wearing a collar, except the harness has more coverage than a collar. I personally prefer a harness over a collar, so that is what I use all the time...they're great! Hope this helped you out a bit! ![]() ![]() ![]() Samsintentions~ Just out of sheer curiosity, when you say "underground border systems," are you speaking of the underground electric fences? Just wondering if that is the same thing! Thanks [This message has been edited by MyBabyShihPoo (edited 03-05-2004).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() No. Its a wire that is burried like 3-6" below the ground. The dog wears a collar and when he crosses the line, it gives a light shock. As the dog gets farther out of the boundaries, it increases. THey also have the GPS border systems where you can set a distance through this little computer system that works similar, the collar emits a sound or shock when the border line is crossed. Mine don't wear the collars anymore, and they won't dare cross the borders. It only took them about 2 weeks to figure it all out. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() MyBabyShihPoo, Okay, I looked at that website. The harness I have for her now is the figure 8 one. Thanks for giving me that link. I think I will have to get her one of the step in ones. Thanks for all of your help! IP: Logged |
