In training class a few weeks ago the trainer told us how bad it is to have the jingling dog tags on your dogs neck. Since they have much better hearing, the jinglind noise really effects their hearing and may even cause deafness. He told us if anyone came in next week with jingling tags we'd have to wear his cow bell. He suggested taping the tags together. Since I found the noise really irritating myself I bought Max a collar tag that just lays flat on his collar. Just some food for thought. IP: Logged |

I bought tag pockets for my dogs, they were about $5.00, if you look at Dooley in this picture you can see his, it's green. It has a little ring inside the pocket that you attach their tags to, then snap shut. It slides onto their collar. Personally I left one tag out of the pocket on each dog...just my preference, you know if he got lost I want to make SURE they see that tag. His rabies, license, a second address and name tag and his microchip tag are all inside the pocket. Witts is from a different company and it's a little lower profile. They sure are nice...nice and quiet.

What a great idea! Where did you get the tag pockets, Maisey? When my dog died this summer, I swear I could still hear her tags jingling. Every time I went in the backyard I could hear them and I would look for her to round the corner. Then I would cry.

I too hate it. My boss just happens to have a leather punch that he uses and leather from the punch so I just popped a smaller hole in and it divides the two tags. I'm happy now. The tag bag is a neat idea but my dogs are too small for that ------------------ IP: Logged |

The one Dooley has on I bought as a part of a basket of stuff at a benefit auction. The one Witt has, that I like better , I bought from my flyball captains grooming shop. This is the kind Dooley has with the snaps, they come in leather or nylon and puttin...they have them small enough for cats so I would imagine it would work for your dogs too. http://www.stellarpets.com/ppsizes.html Witts is made by the same company but called "Pet Pocket Jr.", it's also nylon, but has a cute little patch on the front of it and it closes with velcro instead of the snaps. It has never come open. I couldn't find this one on their site. They have listed with the same name but the picture looks like Dooleys, his is older so maybe Witt's is a newer design but they haven't updated the site with a picture of it. ??? I really like them. Whats funny is in that basket of stuff i bought for the auction, there was also a big bell with a velcro closure that you put on your dogs collar when out in the woods so you can hear where they are, I put it on Witt when we are at the barn and I am working, I can always hear where he is at or how far away. okay, this is a little late, but what kind've tape should I use to tape them together? that sound is really annoying, and so i tried some scotch tape just to see how much it helped, and it helped alot, but it only lasted about 1 hr. IP: Logged |

oops! i sent the other one too soon! I still want to know about the tape, and all, but are there any other ideas besides tap pouches, and plastic tags, or only leaving the tag with his name and address on it? I am just wondering, our dog will hopefully be a hunting dog when he is bigger, and we can't have that jangling noise! IP: Logged |

There are collars and leashes you can order with your dogs name and phone number embroidered into it. This is one place to order them, I didn't see them on their site, but order the catalog...they are in there. https://www.bmbtack.com/index.html You can also buy metal slides that slide onto flat collars and have all your info engraved. http://www.boomerangtags.com/page.php?c=collartags That won't take care of the rabies and license though...but it's a start. I have always considered the jingling tags a warning for my cats. I call it the Early Warning System. They can hear the dogs coming and scatter. I didn't even think about the noise bothering them, since my dogs have never acted like it bothered them. I will definately look into another way to display their tags. The cats are going to be surprised when the dogs come running in without any warning! IP: Logged |

I used to depend on that jingling to kinda keep an ear open for what they were getting into, what room they were in etc., but since I got the pockets, I have learned to hear their other noises, you pick up on the less obvious ones to compensate I think. I'll bet the cats will too. The only time I find the noise useful is when we are at the barn or fishing, something outside where they will be allowed to be off leash and running around. The bells I got work well for that so it has all worked out. IP: Logged |

I ordered Max one of the flat tags that go on the collar from the place Maisey posted, boomerangtags.com I dont' know if you can see it well but here it is: http://hotr.shacknet.nu/images/Max10200307.jpg And as far as the tape goes, I'm really not sure, didn't think it work to well so I didn't ever try it , making masking tape? Duct tape seems like it would be too hard to get them off if you actually had to look at them. I really like the flat tag idea but I doesn't have his rabbies information on it which could present a problem. [This message has been edited by NewLabOwnr (edited 11-06-2003).] IP: Logged |

k, thanks! I just thought of another idea! Maybe I will try to stick one of those little sticky tags(that go under furniture legs) between his two tags, that may work kind've like the leather! IP: Logged |

I thought about getting a flat tag for identification then leaving the rabies tag on the ring. With only one tag on the ring it shouldn't jingle. IP: Logged |
