Author | Topic: Duke was slashed with a knife yesterday |
dukesdad Member ![]() Posts: 117 |
![]() ![]() ![]() OK. First, Duke is OK. Yesterday I took hm out to a lake to swim. This lake is located over a levee about 1/4 mile from a highway so it is a place where lots of dogs gather every weekend to play and swim. We were there for about an hour with Duke, Freckles, two other Labs and a smaller mixed Lab. A friend of mine also brought his young Springer Spaniel. All of the dogs were having their usual great time when a man that had been watching the play for about thirty minutes began to walk back toward the parking lot with his small dog on a leash. My friends Springer ran after them to see if the small dog wanted to play and I could see from the distance the man sort of slapped his hand at the Springer. Then Duke ran up and again the man slapped at Duke so I hollered for him and he came running back. When he ran up to me I could see a small spot of blood just below his shoulder and I thought maybe he had been pricked by some barbed wire. When I parted his coat for a better look it revealed a knife slash about six inches long. Then my friend noticed his Springer was also bleeding. All of the other dog owners were aghast and while I tried to corral Freckles one of our group ran after the man who by then had reached the parking area. He managed to get the license plate number of the mans truck and had already called for the police when we got to the lot. I immediately left to take Duke to the emergengy clinic and my friend followed with his dog. Fortunately Duke was not bleeding and his cut did not extend into muscle. He required fourteen stitches however. A constable came to the clinic and took our statements as she had done at the lake from all other witnesses. It is just incomprehensible that someone would slash a dog with a knife that was in no way threatening him or his dog. He had observed all of the dogs for a long time and knew they were just playing and having fun. Don't know where this will go but I'll keep you posted. I expect many of you will blame me for allowing Duke to run free but no one could precdict that someone would be mean enough to slash a dog with a knife. P.S. My friends Springer sustained a deeper cut and the Vet had to install a drain for the wound but Max is doing OK this morning also. Duke is at his regular Vet today so they can do a follow up observation. Here is a link to a photo of Duke after I brought him home. He was still very woozy but you can see the extent of the slash. http://home.flash.net/~jdebess/dukestitches.jpg [This message has been edited by dukesdad (edited 02-02-2004).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Wow, that's just awful. How or why would anyone just lash out at a dog like that? Why was he even carrying a knife, in his hand no less, in the first place? This man clearly has issues and should be caught before he kills. I hope Duke makes a speedy recovery so he's back to enjoying the lake again soon. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Oh my goodness! I am SO sorry! Why do people do stuff like that? That guy doesn't even sound qualified enough to own his dog! You must have better control of your temper than I do, I would've been after that guy, after leaving Ranger with his sister's family, to take him to the vet of course, but, I mean, grrr!!! I just can't stand people like that! (Sorry, I am very tongue-tied this morning, can't seem to finish anything, or say it quite correctly!) ------------------ IP: Logged |

I hope this guy gets locked up and charged. No excuse for what this guy did. He is really sick. [This message has been edited by Karriesue (edited 02-02-2004).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() How easily could he have just picked his little dog up. I'd like to have a chance meeting him. I wouldn't doubt his dog could be taken away from him. If someone does not know how to read the canine family they should not bring themselves around them. There are times I have been rushed, I just pick up one of my dogs, the one that would have a problem with it. Or go the other way. How sad that your poor dog had to suffer this way. ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() How horrible! I imagine you are just in shock Dukesdad. I'm glad that the two of them will be ok, poor guys, they must be bewildered. It's great that the person was able to get his plate number, I noticed you used the term constable..where are you from? and how strict are animal cruelty laws there? Do you know yet what the penalty is for such a crime? Hugs to you and Duke, Maisey IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for all of your support. I will try to follow up with the constables office tomorrow. Maisey, Here in Harris County/Houston there are city police, sherrifs, and precinct constables who mainly patrol the unincorporated areas of the county. Since this attack actually happened in the city limits of Houston the constable told me the city police would also contact me to get a report. Our friend who got the license number and then came to the Vet Clinic to check on our dogs said that eventually there were six patrol cars that responded to the call after I left for the clinic. Just picked Duke up from the Vet's and he is his old self trying to mooch a tret off the Vet's front desk crew. Duke was leaping around and greeting everyone in the waiting room. Dukes Vet Dr. Davis announced to the waiting room "And you should see him when he's feeling good!" Everyone LOL. More later. Dukesdad IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() OMG to think that there are inconsiderate people out there that would just hurt a dog for no apparent reason, my god. Like alot of you, there is no way I would have held back the way you did, I would be after him aswell and there is no way that he would have driven his car away thats for sure. I hope this person is charged for some kind of animal cruelty for doing this, and his dog taken away for what he has done. I hope your dog and your friends dog have speedy recovery's. ![]() ![]() ![]() FYI: animal cruelty is a felony in Texas. I think you can get a hefty fine and up to 5 or 6 years in jail. The punishments still aren't stiff enough, but it's better than most states where it is only a misdemeanor. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Best wishes to Duke... The sad thing about dogs being hurt like that is that they are so innocent, loyal and loving, it's a complete betrayal of their nature. I feel sorry for the poor dog that is still living with this guy. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hello Dukesdad. It just brought tears to my eyes to read your post. What a terrible thing to happen. What a heartless human to slash a dog. Off the planet with him. I just continue to be shocked at what others do to animals. Why was this guy carring a knife. He obviously was prepared to act out some sort of violence. Im so glad to hear Duke is doing well. I took a look at the picture. Poor fellow the cut looks awful. He is a handsome guy. Give him a sugar from me. What a face!!!! I would just be nuzzlin that face all day long! I grew up with labs. We had two black one's at different times. They were both named Snoopy. They were both so loveable! I noticed you live in Houston. I also am in Houston. Well, Sugar Land. Have you been to the new dog park on Westheimer and Hwy 6? We've taken the dogs there about 4 times. Our Italian Greyhound Romi(24lbs) has a blast. He loves all the big dogs. He wants them all to chase him. He thinks in his mind he is a big dog. Actually he is quite large for an Italian. We have a Whippet (Annie) also. She is a little princess at the dog park. She has jumped on to peoples laps when they are sitting on a bench nearby. If she sees a big dog running her way..up she goes. Snuggle me, hold me! Aren't I beautiful! It has been great to take her up there. It's the first place in Houston that we have found that is fenced in. She can never be off her leash away from home, so to take her to a fenced in area is so freeing for her. Wow, to let her get out there and run! Boy can she run! Our yard is a decent size, but 15 acres is heaven for her! I just thought It was interesting to have found this message board today, and the first meassage I read is from someone in Houston. So keep in touch. Possibly see you at the dog park. Take care of yourself and Duke! ------------------ IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Update: This morning both Duke and Max are doing well and recovering. Just got word that criminal charges will be filed by the D.A."s office and the City of Houston police homicide division has been assigned to investigate, as it involved assault with a deadly weapon. We have been receiving assistance from the Commissioner's Office for this Precinct as they do not want this person anywhere near any of their public recreation areas. Everyone does believe this is a very disturbed person. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Karriesue, I do not know if they have located this individual yet or not but it should not be difficult if the licnese plate number we reported is accurate. I'll let everyone know how this case proceeds. Thanks for your concern. Dukesdad IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Hi Dukesdad, I'm happy to hear that the police Dept. is taking this case so seriously! Thank you for the updates! this post is one that I can't stop thinking about, I'm just so happy that the dogs will be o.k. I was wondering what was going through thier minds when that monster lashed out like that. Sincerely, Susan IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() gooddogyeshimis Thanks for your reply. Actually I did take the boys to the new dog park just last Saturday but it was so muddy that Sunday I took them to the swimming lake which is off Hwy 6 at the intersection with Briar Forest. That is where this attack occured. Please visit the web site I created for my first Lab Jake who survived an episode of bloat then lived to almost fifteen. You can see Dukes site from there also. I think you will enjoy the story. http://home.flash.net/~jdebess/index.htm Dukesdad IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() wow...disturbed individual most definately. That would mean he had the knife in hand as he was walking his dog back to the car. What do they say on Law and Order...shows intent? :P Really though it shows the state of mind of the individual. Hope the prosecution goes well. Enforcement of animal abuse laws is getting better but it isn't anywhere near what it should be in my opinion. Have you or the other owner any thoughts of asking the man to be responsible for the vet bills? Personally I would. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Update, Wednesday. Got a report this morning that the police went to the address that was listed on the registration of truck with the license plate number we reported. The people at that address told the police that they had sold that truck about two weeks ago. The police will continue to track it down. The new owner will have to register it in his name very soon. The Commissioner's office told us the police are more interested in locating this guy for slashing our dogs than they would be if he had slashed me. He will be tracked down soon. I'll keep everyone posted. Duke continues to heal. I tried to apply a little Polysporin to the wound but Duke did not like for me to touch the stitches which are very stiff. The Vet said I could apply Hydrogen Peroxide instead. That Lab skin is just like his coat. The solution just beaded up and ran off so I had to resort to using a cotton ball. Duke didn't care for that either. I think I'll just leave it alone unless it starts to look red. Of course he is on antibiotics also. Vet said I could give him two 25mg tablets of Benadryl if it starts to itch. Any other suggestions as to what I could be doing? Thanks Dukesdad IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I know that it's hard to touch it and clean it and it seems like it is hurting him...my husband had a really hard time with this when Dooley cut his leg open...but you really need to clean it with the peroxide, just dab at it with a soaked cotton ball. or drizzle it over the top, it may seem like it's just running off but it is getting in there and cleaning if you see some bubbles. We struggled with Dooleys cut for longer than we should have had to in part because my husband just wanted to "leave it alone". He meant well, but sometimes you have to be firm and do the hard stuff..(thats what I told him..which resulted in ME having to do it!) Distract him with a stuffie or treat when he gets itchy, talk to him in an animated voice, whatever it takes to get his mind off it. My vet also told me not to put creams on it which was hard for me, I kept wanting to. Hang in there. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() I was told that if a dog can lick the wound area, to leave it alone. That putting creams and stuff on it was doing more harm than good, since a dog would injest it. IP: Logged |
