Ok. I just got back from Indiana's 2nd basic training class. He did really well .... that is when he is paying attention. He just likes to look at the other dogs, etc.

He's 5 1/2 mos old now. I know he is still young but at what age should I expect him to start giving me his attention?

Also, besides food, what are some good ways to try to get his attention?
I call to him, etc. but that doesn't work. I don't want to use food b/c first, he snaps and I need all my fingers, second, he anticipates rather than listens when I have food, and third, I'm not always going to have a treat.

SOme trainers use a clicker. I like this method, but I always leave the darn thing when I need it!

You can teach him an attention command. I think some of it just depends on the dog, though. The dog we had before Nala lived to please. She would trot along looking up at me every other second to see if I wanted her to do anything. I'd let her off leash and she'd come and sit by me instead of going to play.

Nala only pays attention to me if I have food in my hand and there's nothing else interesting going on.

It does seem to get better with age, though.
