This female Pit Bull I got yesterday is severly underweight and full of milk. She is also discharging blood from her vulva. I don't breed...and my animals have always been spayed/neutered so I don't know about cycles and whats normal. Should she be spotting 6 weeks after having a litter? Is she going into heat again? Is there anything I am supposed to be doing to help her dry up? I think they just pulled her away from the litter and dumped her. I am so in over my head! LOL, I always dive in head first without thinking. Whoever said males will back down to a female everytime was sorely WRONG! Witt isn't backing down to nothing.

Its normal for her to do this, and yes, she will come into heat as early as 8 wks after whelping.... Keep the two separated. SHe obviously has some dog agression. You wouldn't want her getting hurt or Witt. As for her milk, it looks like she was abruptly taken from the litter. You can help by rubbing a non fragrance lotion on them. Also watching for any feverishness in her nipples or milk area. You can put a pair of panties on her witha maxi to keep her from bleeding everywhere. She's beautiful. I don't thinkit'll be hard to find her another home, but I'd have her fixed ASAP! You wouldn't believe the lengths that dogs go to to breed! IP: Logged |

Hi maisey i have never known a female to come back into heat 6weeks after she gave birth. From the looks of her mammary glands she should not be in heat she still has alot of milk. Some females spot a little for a few weeks after birth but the amount of discharge should start to disapear after about 3weeks. I would have her checked out by a vet just to be on the safe side and to make sure she has no infections. She should really be still with her litter since its only 6weeks since she had her babies. It has been known for some females to retain either a dead puppy or an afterbirth and not show any ill effects until a couple of weeks later and this can make her ill. Please keep us posted of her progress mike IP: Logged |

Masey, I can't help you with any advice as far as her lactating is concerned, because my dogs are also all spayed/neutered. But as far as the mutual dislike, (she and Witt), yes this is because they're both Alphas. If you can take her with you to work, that's the best solution, since otherwise, you would have to step in and put both of them in their places whenever they snipe at each other. Eventually they would learn to tolerate each other, but as you said, it's best for her to go to a home where she is the only baby. But boy, is she beautiful!!!!! IP: Logged |

Hi i have just checked and any discharge that continues for over 4-5weeks after birth should be reported to a vet. Pyometra usually occurs after a female has been in heat and is caused by bacteria entering the uterus and this causes a fluid build up in the uters and womb and normally results in the female needing to be spayed. If possible tale her temp and if this is either lower the 95 or higher than 103.5 then this should also be told to the vet as a low temp is a sign of hypothermia due to hormonal inbalance and if its high then this is a result of an infection. A female usually comes back inito heat 6-8-12months after the litter has been born. She is a beautiful dog and i am sure you will find her a good home. mike IP: Logged |

Hi Maisey, you bit off more than you could chew this time, didn't you? But I know that you'll do fine because you have so much love in you for these canine creatures! She is pretty! I would also see a vet, it's too bad! I know you didn't expect to incur vet expenses.... Good luck! and let us know what happens with her... Susan IP: Logged |

I think I have found her a place, I met with a lady who runs a sanctuary for Pit Bulls last night. She will train her and work with her until she is ready for a home, then find a good one. I am meeting with her today. Icee is doing well, she already looks like she has put a little weight on just in a couple days, she really likes Shawn alot. She knocked his motorcycle over yesterday and he didn't kill her...he just said I'm gonna...I'm gonna...I don't know what!..But I'm gonna!" Then he spent 5 minutes loving on her and explaining how important it is for her to stay away from the bike. He really likes her and I suspect if we didn't have Witt she would have found her home with us. She would be easy enough to train, she is very smart and wants to please us so much. She does have some separation anxiety issues, not severe, and completely understandable. She is NOT potty trained and I have new respect for people who have adult dogs to train. You can't just quickly pick her up and run for the door...UGHHH. She is very vocal, but rarely barks. She sounds more like a dolphin than a dog. She does have a small start of demodex but other than that is healthy. I have offered to do adoption days with her...help out at events, whatever to help her be placed when the time comes. I just can't have her in my house, one of them is going to get hurt. In fact they got into it yesterday when i was on the phone with the lady, so she got an ear full. IP: Logged |

Aww she's so precious, what a great thing you did by taking her in! You possibly saved her from a life of litters! Kudos to you! IP: Logged |
