Hello everybody!!! This morning I came home to my first batch of guppy fry! First there were 10, now there are 22 and my poor guppy is still fat! She hasn't even tried to eat any of them, and they haven't been sucked up the filter. But I went ahead and floated some of my hornwort in there just in case she changes her mind and gets hungry. I crushed some flake food up for them until I can get into town to get some fry food. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what kind of food to buy for them? I'm soooooo glad I put her in my new 5 gal yesterday! Here's some photos of my new babies:

Ok, it looks like she had about 3 more and she is now back to her regular slim figure. I went ahead and put her back into her normal tank and the poor girl is now being chased even worse than she was before . The fry are now swimming about and enjoying their new home, and still not being sucked into the filter. I'm so glad my female didn't eat them, everyone I've ever spoken to about guppies has said "the mother will eat the fry" now I have proved them wrong! Anyway, I have almost no clue what to do now, so as always any suggestions are welcome. There are now 25 swimming fry in a 5 gal tank set up yesterday (1/2 of the water was from my community tank, so it's not actually all new). Thanks again, Tina IP: Logged |

I feed my molly fry frozen baby brine shrimp (San francisco brand). Give them small feedings about five times a day. MAny companys make food especially for baby fish and any lfs should carry them in th eir freezer When they get a little larger, I feed them dried bloodworms that I crush to a fine powder between my thumb and forefinger. There is also a liquid baby fish food available but it tends to cloud the water. IP: Logged |

Ok, I've done some researching online and one site I found said to mix an egg yolk with water and put a couple tiny drops into the tank. I did this and they actually ate it. I've been freaking out all day because everything says to feed them at least once every 3 hours and I couldn't get them to eat anything. So how often should I do a water change do you think? Every couple days? I'm picturing that being too stressful for day old fish to handle very well, and I'd probably accidentally suck them up! What do you guys think? IP: Logged |

Kristina- I actually just have 4 males and 4 females. But only one of the females has ever even been pregnant. The males show NO interest what so ever in the other 3 girls. They spend the day chasing the one female instead. And in case this helps with your fish I will tell you how I fed them: Get an egg and separate the yolk from the white. Put the yolk in a small bowl and add a little water. Whip it with a fork until it turn frothy and then takes the tines of the fork dip it into the egg mixture and then drop about two drops into the tank. It's the only thing my guppies will eat, but unfortunately it has also made my water quite cloudy. I bet I'll have to clean my tank more often if I continue feeding this to them. Good luck if you have babies too! IP: Logged |

Congrats! And I'm impressed that you can actually get a head count. I honestly don't know exactly how many yellow lab fry I have in my 10 gallon. They move so fast I can never get an accurate count. As for feeding, all I've ever fed my fry (cichlids & guppies) was crushed versions of the adults' food and they've done just fine with that. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Thanks Chelle! I have proud parents syndrome right now (calling all friends, relatives, and people who don't care to tell all about the new arrivals) LOL. Anyways, I started with the egg because they wouldn't take the ground up flake. A few more hours grinding the flake and it was small enough. I gave them the drops of egg first to show them that food was coming and immediately swirled a bit of the flake into it and they went nuts for it. Also, I've noticed that they are picking at the hornwort as well so hopefully they won't starve. I'll be going to Wal-Mart tomorrow to get some fry food. Also, since you've had guppy fry before: Do you really have to feed them every two hours? I've been doing some research and a lot of websites say to feed at least every two hours because their digestive tracts are emptied every 20 minutes. Is this true do you think? One last question, the water changes. About how often do you think I should do them? I was think about 25% tomorrow because the water is quite cloudy because of the egg. Or would this be more harmful than beneficial? Thank you, and I apologize for the rambling long post. Oh, I lied one last question I promise! What do you do with the fry? I'm pretty sure that if I can convince the LFS to take them (not easy to do) they will only take them as feeders and not give me credit or anything for them. And they obviously can't stay in their home forever. I've got a couple friends I can probably pawn them off on but who knows? Thanks again, Tina IP: Logged |

I am in the process of breedin some guppies and i certainly do not feed them every 2 hours. I dont no about how successful this would b (it mite b a gud thing to feed them every 2 hours) but my baby guppies r growin fine on jus 1 meal of crumbled flake in the mornin and 1 meal of tubifex worm in the evening. I change 10% of the water weekly, but my tank is 60x20x20 cm. RTBShark PS good luk with raising the fry!!! IP: Logged |

Just be careful with the water quality if your going to feed that often. I find that our guppy fry do well with just twice a day feedings. Congrats, and good luck! IP: Logged |

I've always fed mine about 3 or 4 times a day. In fact, a while back I had to get rid of all my guppies to make room for my african fry, so I fed the guppies to my oscars. Two of the females were very pregnant and gave birth in the oscar tank. They were so small that the oscars initially ignored them and all they ever got to eat were the oscars' scraps. After about 2 weeks, the oscars finally started eating them and when it got down to one, I put him in my 1 gallon until he was big enough for my 10 gallon community tank (figured if he survived that long with the oscars, he deserved to live). He's now a healthy 3/4" guppy. So I guess my point is, guppy fry are pretty hardy and short of a real disaster like off the scale water conditions and broken heater, they can survive quite a bit. -Chelle IP: Logged |

Well, they all made it through the night as far as I can tell. They're moving much faster today so I can see what Chelle means about not being able to get a good head count. And they actually went for the crushed flake this morning so maybe I will be able to lay off the egg. How often do you guys do water changes? I think I'm going to do one today because the water is so cloudy. Any other advice is appreciated, I've never had any fry longer than an hour before and that was 10 years ago. Thanks, Tina IP: Logged |

We just pull out the fry and put them in a safe container. Then we vacuum the gravel and once thats done you can put them back. It's just so tough to actually see if you vacuumed a little fry or not. Another option would be to catch them and put them in a breeder container in the tank. IP: Logged |

Thank you! I made it to the store today and bought some finely ground fry food made by hikari and they seem to go for it. They just wouldn't take my ground up flakes often. Maybe they taste bad? Thanks again! IP: Logged |
