my mare is in heat.as she has a long tail she pees and stuff on it..i have cleaned, braided and then folded it in half like a polo pony tail with a stable bandage as a tail bandage..i haven't put it on tight, but enough that it will stay.but as i haven't put a tail bandage on her before,i am not sure how long i can safely have it on for.and like i said i DON'T have it very tight.

Using vet wrap will do the job just fine, it'll allow the tail to "breathe". Naturally I wouldn't leave it on more than a week.

If you want to lose your til, vetwrap will do the trick. Vetwrap, or flexus or anyother bandage that has elastic in it, will cut off circualtion iff it slips at all. You should NEVER wrap a tial with any type of elastic wrap and leve it on for any longer that 24 hrs!!! If your mare pees on her tail while in heat, then wash it before, braid it, then put it in a commercially available tail bag until she goes out of heat. Then you can wash it again. If it is the top of the tail that she pees on, try braiding all the way down her dock to keep all the loose hairs in place. Other than that, I would not reccommend leaving a tail wrap on for more than a day. You may just have to deal with if for one week out of the month and wash her tail when it is over.

Vetrap will work fine for your mare's tail. You can use it just the same as your stable wraps, just don't wrap tightly around the tail bone. I usually leave my tails wrapped for about a week, but don't freak if you leave it on longer. You won't lose your tail for at least 2 weeks, and even then it's doubtful. But to err on the side of caution, I would stick to about a week. Have fun...
