![]() ![]() ![]() I've been given an older mare (20yrs) shes very good & perfect to ride! Shes fat as a tick on Stratagy food (previous owner had her on) but it has 14% protein, does an older horse need this much protein, I have another horse, 6 yrs old, on 10% sweet feed, and she looks good but I'd like to have them on same food, I dont dare give the younger one 14% because she hyper now, anyone have any suggestions? ![]() ![]() ![]() She shouldn't need that now. What I would be conserned with is her teeth and nutrition intake from her intestines and organs. There is an awsome feed out there by Purina called Equine Senior, and Strategy works good as well. If she's over weight that can be more harmful to an older horse that is underweight. Definately diet if she's over 100lbs too heavy. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() The most protein your older horse needs is 10%. High protein feed raises the Nitrogen levels in their blood and if they are not working hard they use the bathroom a lot. So basically they pee out all the money you spend on that 14% feed. She should be just fine on a 10% feed with plenty of hay. If they are stalled they don't need a high protein either. Equine Senior is a good feed if you can afford to feed it. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for the info, I thought 14% was a little high, they get out everyday to pasture. And I'll sure cut her feed down. IP: Logged |
