How do you tell the difference between a male and female cockatiel? Mine is very loud, whistles a song, whistles at us, says a couple of words. Does that mean he's definetly male? (My daughter gave her a female name.) IP: Logged |

you dont say how old the bird is so if its a baby and less then six months old you will have to wait till he or she molts at six months. Though if its older then six months its very easy to tell male from female. Now the male has a yellow face and orange big dots of his cheeks and if a girl the face is all grey with yellow dots on the checks I hope this helped. I saw what the other guy wrote, but also the males rub their selves on something, and the female-you should notice nesting behavior. Hope this helps IP: Logged |

Hi, just wanted to let you know that a female cockatiel for the most part will have dull cheek patches, and bars along the tail, and sometimes under the wings will have yellow patches. If you are experienced and can handle the bird if you turn the bird over the bones near the vent will be further apart on a female and closer together on the male. The male will not have the bars on the tail nor will his cheek patches be dull, but instead a bright orange patch. Hope this helps. J&M Birds IP: Logged |

Hi, You don't say what colour your bird is.. Grey Males have a bright yellow head with bright orange cheek patches.. Grey females have a olive like head with dull orange cheek patches. Lutinos and ablino's are harder to sex But again if the lutino has orange patches they will br brighter in the male... Barring of the tail is not a reliable indication of sexing as juvinile birds have this and all resemble the female when still young.. DNA sexing is now available from an avain vet... The vent theory is also unreliable as it feels the same between male and female if still young... IP: Logged |
