I posted earlier and I'd like if that got replies, but I also have some more questions. How can I tell if its a girl or a boy? A baby or an adult? How can I make sure I know if it ever gets sick? And would by a window be an appropriate place? My bird is green and yellow, with black spots on its wings. He/she has faint black lines on the top of his head. Does this help to know if its a girl or a boy? Please reply! Thank you! IP: Logged |

Okay, parakeets are easy to tell sex. When you look at the nose or nares, there is a coloring of the skin there. If its a purple, its probably under 6 months old and you'll have to wait a little while until it developes more to tell the sex. If its nose is blue, and you'd know this blue from purple, its a boy. And vice versa, if its nose is pinkish tan, its a girl. After 6 months or so, its kinda hard to tell the age. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

Thanks for this! My parakeet's nose, the part above her/his beak is light purple. Does that mean its six months old? I guess I'll have to wait, but how long? So its easy to tell the different between the blue and the purple? P.S. Just asking: What do I do if my bird gets very noisy? What are some tips to keep it quieter, because my mom hates loud noises IP: Logged |

Okay you cant tell how old your bird is by the black rings on top of its head if there is alot of them like for example if they reach the end of its head its really young. And you said that the nose looks purpple yea its going to be a boy. If your bird gets too noisy its prob cuz he is excited or he wants to come outside take him outside. email me if you have anymore questions at bring_it97@hotmail.com IP: Logged |

male and female birds have what is called a cere which is at the top of the beak a males cere can be either blue or purple but so can a young female the females cere is a pale colour which changes to a dark brown when in breeding mode the colour of the cere doesnt change to its proper colour till after the birds first molt which usually occurs at about 12 weeks and can last several months so dont be alarmed if u find feathers on the cage floor this is normal unless u see the bird actually ripping them out but there is no way of actaully teeling the sex until after the first molt IP: Logged |
