My wife and I recently got a parakeet. He's a bit of a rescue -- we had a neighbor who had three parakeets, then they had babies and had eight. They got sick of them and put them in their garage!

Another one of my neighbors stormed over and took all of them. She knew my wife and I used to have a parakeet so she showed us the birds and we fell in love with one of them.

We think he's probably less than 6 months old. We've had him for about three weeks now and have some questions.

Whenever we put our hands in his cage he stays very calm. In fact, now we can put our finger right up to him and slowly stroke his chest -- but when we push into his chest a little harder (to get him to climb on our finger) he just slowly shuffles out of the way.

Any ideas on how to get him to come up on the finger?

Also, our house gets a little bit cool at night (about 60 degrees F) is that too cold?

And finally, I work from a home office and like to bring him in the office during the day with me, then bring him back downstairs to our living room during the evening when my wife and I tend to be down there. Is it okay to move him a lot?

Sorry for all of the questions -- we just want the little guy to be happy!

Hi Jeff And Megan, Yes it is perfectly fine to move your bird around as they love company wether it be from humans or other birds so dont worry to much about unsettling him.

The temprature is fine aslong as it dont drop below that covering him at nite with a sheet or cloth will keep heat in but please allow air to be able to enter the cage aswell.

As for him shuffling away from your finger when you press against his chest dont worry he will eventually sit on your finger he just needs time to adjust him being locked out in the garage he wont have had much contact with humans, him letting you touch his chest is step one and more contact has has with the family the quicker he will learn your there to look after him and love him.
So patience is a good thing..

From what i can tell your doing everything correct but if you have anymore questions please feel free to email me at boro_lad1976@hotmail.com and i will be sure to help you out...

Mike
