I have a grey cockatiel that doesnt want to eat anything but his birdseed and honey nut cheerio's (he's even picky about what seeds in his bird seed he eats) I've read that you should supplement your birds diet with fruits and nuts and things like that. Does anybody have any suggestions on what they normally would eat or should eat to remain healthy...i've tried a few things but i don't know how to introduce them in a way that he will accept. He is about a year old.

Hi, i Own 4 cockatiels one of which is only 10 weeks old and i have raised him since he was 3days old due to his parents killing his other this brothers/sisters...

I feed my birds a selection of seeds fresh fruit and vegtables daily.

My baby cockatiel took to the veggies after about a week.

Also a cuttlefish should be given for extra calcium and a vitamin block..

I would not worry too much about him choosing what seeds he likes and not eating the ones he dont aslong as he is eating well and drinking there is no problems he wont lose weight...

Does he eat well?
Does he drink well?
Is He happy and vocal males are usually very vocal???

Aslong as he does not stop eating he will be fine..

anymore problems please feel free to email me for advice.

Thanks!!

He eats well and is sssoooo loud. I was just wondering which fruits and veggies would be most beneficial and tasty to a tiel. Do you have any tips on getting him to eat his veggies?

My cockatiel likes spinich, carrot shavings, apples and... anything I eat! Birds are attracted to bright colors. The darker the veggies the better they will be for the bird. I have even given her cooked frozen veggies, which she loves, and they are soft and easy to eat. If your bird is anything like mine, eating them in front of it will make it want some too!

My cockatiel is a picky eater. He was 3 years when we brought him home and he wouldnt eat anything except seed. In order to get him to eat more of a variety I put the seeds at the bottom of the dish and then layered fruits and veggies on top.
My parents suggested making a birdie bread to put on top of the seed so that way it crumbles and mixes in with the seed and they get used to having to eat it.
I will look for the recipe and post it for you.

Also make sure that the seed you are feeding is vitamin fortified. If he is being super picky about eating anything else but seed atleast he is still getting an extra boost of vitamins.

Cockatiels can live on a seed diet alone but will eventually develop nutritional deficiencies, especially if breeding. Feeding only a pelleted diet to cockatiels often results in kidney problems as the bird ages. The best way to feed cockatiels is to mix a pelleted food made for cockatiels, half and half, with a good clean cockatiel seed mix, which is relatively low in sunflower seeds. Cockatiels are reluctant to accept new foods and will accept few fruits and vegetables. They do tend to enjoy whole wheat bread, grated carrots, boiled eggs and shredded greens, and these items are an excellent supplement for breeding birds. They will often eat apples and love broccoli. However broccoli should not be fed daily because of its oxalic acid content, which can lead to kidney and calcium metabolism problems. Grit should not be offered. Vitamins and minerals should be supplemented if more than 50 percent of the diet is seed. Also, Your bird should not eat everything that you eat. Avoid the following foods: iceberg lettuce and cabbage (these can cause diarrhea), caffeine, cola, chocolate, avocado, and sugary or salty snacks (these can be harmful). Remove fresh fruits and vegetables within 4 hours of offering to prevent spoilage. If the bird gets too much liquid from the fresh fruits and vegetables, the droppings could become runny and discolored. Stop the fresh fruits and vegetables for a day if this occurs to determine if this is the reason. Good Luck!

Hi, All fruit and veg need to be washed before offering these to your bird.

Cockatiels love sunflower seeds aswell as nuts, if your bird is hand tame the best way to introduce fruit and veg is by holding it to its beak if he turns away dont push him he will eat them eventually if he wants to..

You may think that cuttlefish is only for breeding females to help with eggs but this is not true it also aids with calcium giving your bird this will keep his calcium levels up.

Vitamin blocks are also available to keep him in top condition..

feeding pellets aswell as seeds is good for him.

vegtables that are good for birds are,
Cabbage, lettace,Broccoli ( given in small amounts every other day ).

Boiled eggs only in small amounts, Apples, kiwi banana's .

These are just some of the things you can give to your bird.

Aslong as he has added calcium aswell as a vitamin block he will be perfectly fine..

I will add a pic of my baby cockatiel meeko i raised since he was 3days old so you can see how well he doing on the above things i feed him and his parents..
