please help, I have a parakeet who is about 4 years old. We have never had a problem with her but in the past 2 weeks, she has been really tired and just not herself. She normally plays and sings and now all she does is sleep. And she also has this stuff around her mouth. It looks like food and stuff, but im not sure. She tries to get it off but it wont come off. She also is really puffed out all the time. Can anyone please tell me what it is and if she is sick what can i do at home to help her until i can get to an aviary vet. Thanks for all your help IP: Logged |

Hi There a change in any birds behaviour could be any number of things, With it being a hen is there any signs of her being egg bound( eggs stuck in oviduct) this can cause a bird to become tired and lifeless. Also if she has caught a cold or any other bug that is floating around can cause her to fluff up her feathers. Has her diet been change or a change in routine. If the stuff round her beak is food this can be removed by gently holding her and using a warm damp cloth gently wipe her beak. Is her poop still normal looking or is it watery. Does she have cuttlefish bone available to her and a vitamin block. An avain vet should be seen straight away you can also call the vet and tell them the situation most avain vets will see the bird immediatly. Please keep us informed of her progress.. Keeping her warm is the main thing aswell as getting a little food and water into her using a syringe if she will not feed herself or drink for herself mike IP: Logged |
