Hi I'm new here and I need help. My bird is a amazon parrot. He's 7 years old, eats well never been sick till few days ago I notice his voice was squeaky. Like he has a cold
Well, I no some things are toxic to birds and I was wondering if space heaters are?
We just move here and we have gas heat now and before we has central heat. Could it be the heater? I read some where to where they are toxic to birds please help!

Hi Providing there is no gas leak then this tyoe of heating should not cause a problem.
Have an avian vet check him out just to make sure there is nothing wrong with him.

Thanks for the help. I will call a vet today
my main concern was the sound of his voice the squeaky in his voice and he can't talk.

It's like when someone has a bad cold is what he sounds like. And when I read that article about heater were toxic to birds it made me think well maybe that's what's wrong with him. So I have no reason to worry then about the space heater? I no there is no leaks I just has it check Friday.

What about "Electric" heaters are they OK to use? Thanks everyone for your help.

Here's what I read.

ELECTRIC HEATERS

“Please, Please warn people about the following product. My wife and I recently lost two members of our family. One was a 4 year old Orange Wing Amazon, and the other member of my family was a 10 year old Parakeet. Both in perfect health and happy as can be. One Saturday morning, at 2:30 am, we heard a hallowed squawking sound from Andy, our Orange Wing Amazon. We found him at the bottom of his cage, gasping for air. A minute later, he died in my arms. Immediately following his death (approximately 2 minutes), my parakeet passed on as well.

We were dumfounded. We had not a clue as to what happened. We checked for any gas leaks, had the power company come out, but not a trace of gas. We later learned that their death was caused by fumes from an electric heater, purchased to help take the chill out of the air for our dear family members.

The quartz heater purchased was a MARVIN MODEL 5000 QUARTZ HEATER, with Humidifier. Apparently some of the parts have been coated with TEFLON, without warning on the packaging. I will be contacting the manufacturer soon to voice my displeasure. Please be cautious of electric heaters.”

Teflon is highly toxic to birds but some elctric heaters are fine providing the room the birds are in does not get to hot covering the cage at night helps keep some heat in but leave a space at the bottom of the cage so air can get in.

the only way that the heaters could have killed the birds was the heater being put in direct line of the birds even tho a heater is on in a room tere should be some ventilation in the room aswell like a window open slightly just to allow air to circulate.

Always check heaters to make sure there is no teflon parts if unsure contact the manufacturer just to make sure before using.

Just to let everyone no that my bird is OK
He's doing great now. I took him to the vet yesterday and he had a cold. Was giving an antibiotic to take for 5 days. I was so relieved! that is was just a cold and not something really bad but I no a cold is bad enough but we can treat that. So I hope in a few days he will be back to his self.
Thanks to you all for your help.
