Hi, for my birtday my father is getting me a cockateil and i've been searching on how you tell the sexes apart and i think i preety much have that all down but what i need help with is when you buy the bird does the person who sells it to you tell what its age is or can you tell buy some distinng markings on it feathers?
Also i have a male parakeet and will the two get along if i take them out and place them in a same cage for awhile?

Thanks for your help!

Before you kill someone run a mile in their shoes, so that way you're a mile away and have their shoes!

HI, In the normal grey cockatiels you can tell the sex by the cheek patches males have brighter and more dominant orange patches on the cheeks, Females are more duller.

buying a bird should be from a proper breeder someone who knows the parent history aswell as the age and sex of the birds.
Buying from a pet store is not a good idea.

Putting a new bird with another bird in the household should not be done for atleast 2weeks after buying the new bird the new bird should be placed in a cage of its own and in a room away from your parrakeet, withing the 2weeks you can observe the cockatiel for any illnesses that he/she may have.

Once your sure the bird is healthy you can then put the cages next to each other till they get to know each other.

As with all animlas there is a risk of the larger bird attacking the smaller one so far i have not come across this problem with my cockatiels and budgies they get on really well.
