We have a male and female cockateil. The female we've had for a year and a half. She wont let us touch her. We got the male about 6 mnths ago. He is only about 10 months old. He has been very sweet and smart. he talks like crazy. Now they have been mating and he is getting mean and has been biting us. Also, the are constantly mating and our kids are wondering what they heck they are doing. I don't really want to separate them because we don't want another bird cage. Is there a way to discourage this?

Hi, because the birds have already started to mate the chances are she will go ahead and lay eggs.

To discourage mating shorten the amount of hours light the birds recieve.
Rearange toys and perches in the cage even moving the cage to a different part of the room or into another room will also discourage them from mating.

Male cockatiels do usually become agressive during breeding.

Is your hen does lay eggs and you dont want babies then you can simply remove each egg as its laid boil and mark with a number allow them to cool and place back with the hen and allow her to sit on them until she gets bored of them.

Never just remove eggs as this will encourage her to lay more eggs to replace the ones taken and can seriously depleat her calcium levels.

She should be given a cuttlefish bone attached to the cage this gives her added calcium also a vitamin blcok will help keep the birds in top condition.
