I bought a new parakeet yesterday and he hasn't eaten yet. How long should I wait before wondering if he's sick?? I know he has to adjust to his new home, but I'm getting worried. He's quiet and pretty much sits in the same spot without moving. IP: Logged |

Hi Being in a strange new home your bird will feel uneasy talk to him alot this helps them feel safe also you may want to cover his cage a little so he feels safer. Usually new birds start to eat withing 24hours it just depends really on how well he adjusts. You can give an avian vet a call and let him know the situation he/she may want to look your bird over just to make sure there is nothing wrong. Birds also when in a new home are usually very quiet does he still drink water. You could try giving him fresh fruit and veg aswell as some whole wheat bread see if he will eat that. I would not let him go more than 48hours without food and water. Keep us posted of his progress. Mike IP: Logged |

hey-yeah it take them awhile to eat. i would set them by the bowl and leave them in a room where there isnt any sound or movement tilll they get use to you and the movements and sounds of your house. IP: Logged |

Good news... he started eating a little bit of millet about an hour or so, after I posted my message. I also put the water dish right up to his beak and he appeared to take a few sips. He's eating more millet as we speak!! I just don't want him to get hooked on that. But it's better than nothing for now. He even let out a few LOUD chirps this afternoon. I don't have children, so to me that was like hearing your child speak his first words!! IP: Logged |

Sounds like he is doing great he is now over the shock of being in a new enviroment and will soon be eating and chirping properly the more you talk to him the better he will adjust. good luck . boro_lad1976@hotmail.com IP: Logged |
