Help! What will I do with my budgies. At first, i thought of having to colony breed them. I watched as they fight for nest and settle down when they have their own nest to breed. However, when i've seen how hard it is for them to mate because other birds are disturbing them while doing some lovemaking, i decided to buy some breeding cage for them. I carefully transfer them to the breeding cage one by one and i was happy to see that they accept the breeding cage immediately. However, the last pair doesn't want to move. I was surprised that the hen already laid an egg in one of the flight nest! The breeding cage is positioned beside the flight cage and then hen always looks at the nest in flight cage(where she laid an egg) and seems not interested with the new nest in her breeding cage. What should i do to bring her to lay another egg? I am worried that she might develop some trauma, (does it occur?). I already tranferred the egg to another pair. Will she accept the new nest? It was just yesterday and tomorrow, she is due to lay another egg. will she lay in the new nest? IP: Logged |

If she will not go in the next box then she will just lay her eggs where she feels comftable. Usually you can pick an egg up of the floor andnplace it in the nest and then put her in there and she soon starts laying eggs in there. Its always have either 1 or nest boxes for each pair of birds you have all situated at the same height that way there will be no fighting for the higher nest. Some hens that have had the routine disturbed like new toys added ot a new nest bax added to the cage can put of egg laying for a couple of weeks till they adjust others will just lay there eggs on the cage floor or in something suitable like a water dish. mike. boro_lad1976@hotmail.com IP: Logged |

She is due to lay egg today, I watched her as she was so upset to lay the egg. There were times when she will go inside the nest but come out again.. Is this a good sign that she will lay the egg inside the nest? If i place the egg in the nest and put her in too, do i have to block the entrance so she will not come out immediately? if so, what should i use to block the entrance? Is it the one where she can still see the outside(e.g. screen) or something like a wood that would definitely darken the nest? I can't bring her the old nest because it will cause a lot of trouble to the other birds. IP: Logged |

Hi she should take to the new nest box once there is one of her eggs inside if not then you will have to wait till next time she is going to lay before she will use it. There is no need to block her in the nest box as she should go back in. Her going in is a good sign. mike. IP: Logged |

Glad she is using the nest box did you transfer her other eggs to the nest aswell. If the eggs are fertile you should expect your first chick 19days after they have been laid you will find that sometimes 2eggs will hatch within a couple of hours of each other but then the 3rd wont hatch till a day or 2 later. Good luck and hope all goes well. mike IP: Logged |
