Hi, I am a novice tiel breeder, i have been breeding for almost 2 years, but i have been researching for about 5 so i know alot on mutations and such. But my problem is not with mutations. Actually it is not a problem, its just something that arised and i dont know what to think of it. I have a pair of first time breeders that have recently laid there first clutch of 5 eggs and are sitting nicely. The thing is that the female started to sit on her eggs since day one when she only had 1 egg, then when there were 2 the male started to sit also. All the tiels i have had and have will usually start to sit at around 3 eggs or so, depending on clutch size. Can someone tell me if this is normal because I have not seen it before IP: Logged |

Cockatiels usually sit there eggs when most of the clutch has been laid others will sit from day one but they are not sitting tightly on the eggs. The male will usually sit the eggs during the day and the hen at night. Young or first time breeders have no experience with egg laying or chick raising so they will do what they think is right. I have bred cockatiels for a while now and all my birds sit from the 3-4th egg. The problem with inexperienced birds like i had with one of mine the male killed 3 out of 4 of the chicks and i had to hand raise the other chick from 3days of age. I know you have been breeding for a couple of years but please be prepared for this the following site is a great source of information they are qualified breeders and have helped me out many of times. Thank you so much for clearing up my doubt, i will definatetly check up on the site. i know its a risk to put 2 inexperienced breeders together so i am preparing for the worst. I decided to breed these two because they are absolutetly gorgeous, with stunning conformation. They have these beautiful crests, the male's is longer but the females is fuller. They are well proportioned, no crossed wing tips and great long tails. (Well theyre a bit mangled now, on the process of growing back) I hope these two are good parents from the start, but i am preparing. Thanks!! IP: Logged |
